Modern Short Hose/garters/UGGH
Readers;
Mayhap someone with the Knowledge can help me here, with a question(which I hope is in the right Forum).
A bit of background is needed- I have worn long hose as a re-enactor of a Scots Regiment(a civilian). When in kilt, I turn the long over the knee & plus lenght hose down over the tyed garter-and go. Note here, the garter is tyed betwixt the knee joint & above the swell of the calf muscle. The garter knot barely shows. It must be tyed here to keep the hose UP!
Now the problem. I bought a dandy-fine pair of circa 2012 kilt hose(Chevoit of Scot-land) from the S.T.M. When I put them on they come to appx. 03 inches below the 'normal for me' garter zone. and the garter knot does, indeed show.
Now the Question: why are circa 2012 Kilt Hose too short? The label & advert implys one lenght only-and the images of kilt hose show the same shortness. The garter, of any sort, is not needed, except for 'show'-it is too low on the leg-and spandex does the rest of keeping the hose up. And does 'one height fits all' play merry h*ll with short & very tall kilt users?
Your thoughts and comments are asked:before I go to a nurseing home and find a 'sweet little old lady' to knit me up a tall pair of hose!
Thanks
CSA

Well at being on the short side - 5'8" - all hose are long for me. So I have developed a neat way of folding the tops down so that they look fine with flashes and garter ties.
But if you do find someone to knit hose, let me know.....

Could I interest you in starting a new thread on that folding technique? Being a towering 5'7" myself I need a good method.
Sorry for the hijack.

CSA,
I use elastic garters w/ Chas style flashes on my shorter hose.I can't rember where he posted this method of makeing flashes but it's around here somewhere,and it looks the same as my trad. garter ties.It also gave me a use for the elastic garters that came w/ my scotweb kilt.

As the American agent for House of Cheviot, I'm interested in your experience. If anything, the comments I tend to get are that the hose are too long, not too short. May I ask what size hose you ordered, and perhaps how tall you are.
FYI, the size S and M hose tend to have leg lengths around 16" (from floor to the top of the hose, when folded), while the L and XL are closer to 18" in height.

I think you may be trying to wear kilt hose to high up your leg. The top of the foldover is normally two to three fingerwidths below the bottom of your kneecap.

I'm with Matt on this - I'm really surprised to hear that they would be too short. If anything, they usually are too long.
Particularly confusing is the comment about the garter knot showing (which I assume means that the turndown doesn't completely cover it). Considering that the House of Cheviot hose tend to have overly-long turndowns, this is quite baffling.
Perhaps a picture would help here, Mr. Anthony?

To all the kind commentators-Greeting/thanks;
It seems I am not used to modern kilt socks(this is my 1st set). And yes, I do normally wear a kilt sock much higher- the socks I use are from the re-enactment profession; which is were kilt hose began its life. It seems the current issue socks for kilts follow the 19th centy english army rules, shorter socks, shorter kilts, shorter coat- less of everything for the Scots Regiments.To see an image to prove the point- have a look at "The Compleat Book of Tartan, Page 91. It shows the calf lenght hose with an elaborate gartering.
As to the 'knot showing' it should have read-'the bulge of the knot makes a lump in the turndown cuff of the hose'.
And yes, a photo would help-if I can find a way to do it(my computer is 'steam powered' & I am not far behind. However, the Image kindly provided by 'davidlpope' of the english/German prince of england-charles; shows the height of the socks on this writer-he & are of the same height. Thus it appears that I am a victim of Unknowing & a Practiioner of lost fashions. Thus I conclude- with all of your kind assistance, that mid-calf is now 'correct' for kilt hose. This was the reason for the Post- to discover what I was missing. I am an Historian-not a 21st Centy Kilt Cloathes Horse-not yet, at least!
With Thanks

Dear ladies and gentlemen of the rabble,
In order to keep this discussion polite and on the correct side of the forum rules on political issues, I would please remind everyone to bear in mind that this is an international forum where a nation's leaders, dignitaries and officials should still be treated with respect, realizing that we are not out to offend members who might happen to stand behind and support those leaders and dignitaries.
While we are not necessarily subject to lèse majesté laws on XMTS, we do still expect a certain level of politeness.
Thank you for understanding,
JD
