My condolences to the family and Murray clan on the passing of the Chief. My thoughts and prayers go with all.

It is interesting that the article mentioned that he was the 4x grandson of the 3rd Duke of Atholl specifically. Why was this particular holder of the title mentioned as opposed to any of the other 10 dukes that preceded him?

Probably because there were no other living male off spring of those gentlemen. Thus, he was nearest heir-male to inherit the dukedom.

This is sad news. However, there is a successor. I recall that when John Murray succeeded to the dukedom, his son inherited the courtesy title Marquess of Tullibardine. So I expect to hear that the marquess has succeeded as duke.
There are a great many Murrays in South Africa. Aside from the contingent of the then duke’s family that came to fight in the South African War, there is also a largely Afrikaans-speaking branch descended from the Rev Andrew Murray, one of the Scottish ministers imported to the Cape by Governor Lord Charles Somerset (early 19th century) with the intention of anglicising the Boer people.
    Regards,
