Had an interesting experience yesterday. Six of us from the local area SAMS post were attending the USS San Francisco Memorial ceremony at Lands End here in SF. We are the honor guard for this event each year. We, of course, were in our kilts.
We were standing around one of the members vehicle getting out the flags and putting on our harnesses when a tourist bus came into the parking lot. This area is also a popular scenic overlook to the Golden Gate Bridge and the Pacific.
The passengers got off the bus and headed for the scenic overlook except for 2 women who had spied the six of us in our kilts and came over to us. They spoke no English and none of us spoke Chinese but they made it clear that they wanted a picture taken with us. We obliged and off they went to join their group. HOWEVER what they must have done was to tell the rest of the busload of people, all Chinese by the way, about us because the next thing we saw was this entire group of 50 or more people running towards us waving their cameras. They all wanted pictures of these 6 strange looking men in their odd getups. Eight or ten of them would gather around us while the others snapped photos and then they would take the cameras from those people and they would come up to get their pictures taken. This went on for about 10 minutes with one group after another giving up their cameras so they could be in a picture.
I would love to know what they thought we were. I can only imagine. Our "official" post photographer was there and I am hoping she will post some pics on line so that I can get one posted here shortly.
