Some brooches / kilt pins fresh from the forge

    Hi all,

After spending a couple of hours hammering a damascus billet which crumbled into the fire... I forged these two penannular brooches / pins just so it wasnt a wasted evening.

Both were done in a relative hurry but turned out ok. I used a linisher to clean up the pin part.

    Hope the photo works.

    regards,

    Chris S

I don't think it was you, Chris, I think it was my connection. For about half an hour, every thing went into terminal death mode.

Anyway, getting back to the matter in hand. I like the right hand one - in fact I like the right hand one a lot. We just don't get to see enough ironwork here or anywhere else for that matter. Lots of emphasis on copper and brass and bronze and silver and nickel steel - everything all bright and shiny. But I think there is a place for a metal that gets its patina from years of use.

I think you are on to a winner here.

    Regards

    Chas

Beautiful work - nice celtic/nordic look.

Wish I could find something like that to replace my (stolen) steel for my bushcraft fire lectures.

thanks guys. The fact that you like the patina look is good, as most of my stuff tends to be like this. I have a dislike of sanding and polishing so even on my knives I tend to leave a forge finish like this (unless It needs to be shiny... then I do the needful).

    Martin,

I'm sure I can make you a steel if you want. They are made of high carbon steel that has been quenched from a cherry red heat. Any preference for size?
