MacTavish-Thompson Green

At the Ohio Scottish Games some lads from Crieff (directors of the Crieff Games) were wearing at least two different, very beautiful tartans featuring a soft green undercheck -- almost sage, but a little darker and cooler. (I have not yet done my homework to try to discover just exactly what the tartans were.)
That got me started thinking and playing with the Scotweb Design program (again).
I started with the MacTavish/Thompson sett and thread count, and substituted colors to get to the overall color tone impression of the Crieff setts. At the same time, I chose elements and colors reflecting the heritage (besides MacTavish) of my brother's and my family. The guarded red stripe from Dunlop, navy from Lindsay, and lighter blue from Watkins of Wales. The green is not classic Irish Kelly green, but it is green, honoring our McQuaid and McLaughlin roots.
With Thompson/MacTavish Red, Camel, Blue, Grey, Dress Blue and Hunting already established, there is really no need for yet another color of the sett, but I couldn't help myself. I am hoping to interest my kinsmen and others enough to enable a run at a reasonable cost. Dalgliesh has very close matches to all of the colors in their yarn palette.

I like it. One thing you might consider is doing what the Fraser Htg does which is to take the red from the clan tartan and replace one of the white lines, so you get alternating red and (other color) lines in the middle of the green field instead of the red with border stripes. Just an idea. If that even makes sense to anyone outside my head.

Kenneth, I think I understand what you mean. That would work, but I prefer the guarded red line. If you've ever seen a strong red next to a strong green, you've experienced the ocular dissonance that occurs when colors on opposite sides of the color wheel border each other directly. Yellow and purple, red and green, blue and orange. It's like a mirage effect. The white border breaks it up, leaving some "tension" without the unpleasantness.

As I said originally, I like it. I was just throwing out an idea, but your well-thought-out reasons against it are convincing. And Peter's endorsement speaks for itself.

Now save your pennies and get it woven. I almost wish I were a MacTavish it's so nice.

Keep the white lines as 2 threads, don't be tempted to make them 4 and ensure that you specifiy the shade as ercu (unbleached white).

I've been down that road and back already. Dalgliesh doesn't even list a pure white in their yarn palette. It's the lightest shade in the "Naturals" group.

I have ID'ed one of the lovely green kilts I saw as Perthshire District. Very nice.
