First Sporran Attempt: Rob Roy Style

I've had some spare time on my hands recently and as I've been thinking about making a sporran for a while i decided to give it a try. I have never worked with leather before so this was really my first attempt at that as well. I was pretty surprised at how well this turned out. The pouch is hand sewn out of buckskin. The drawstrings and flap are made from scrap leather my old man had layin around. The button I picked up from Hobby Lobby for about $3. I found the template for this online here: http://www.troop7.net/Resources/5.%2...20Patterns.pdf and from making the stencils to trying it out on my sporran strap the whole project took about 4 days of working about an hour a day. The instructions I got from the template were simple and easy to follow so thanks to whoever wrote those. Anyway, without further ado, here it is. And of course any comments or criticisms from REAL sporran makers or anyone else for that matter is greatly appreciated.

A beautiful job - and a nice design. Could be a profitable hobby.

Heck, you could make a tidy sum just selling "kits" that people can sew together themselves.

the metal closure is the 'Liberty' side of a U.S. Half Dollar coin. Since the sporran was made of buckskin i thought it would be fitting to put something American as the closure. Besides that the coin just contrasts well and looks good as a closure, even if i say so myself

Very well done, indeed! I would not know that that was a first attempt.

for kicks ..there's an old army ammo (cross) belt that had these brass studs WW1/Boer Wr ..see regimental day sporrans . A piece of deer antler round or cut oval at 45 degree or a deer antler burr . Else a nice like you have, brass button or Revolutionary War or French and Indian War era Regimental coat button ..Dixie Gun Works etc . look for Black Watch button ..Fraser's ..Murray's regiments ..see Tandy Leather supply .
    very, very nice work
..I was at N'dakinna Nat Amer festival in Saratoga NY about Sept/Oct ..this lady made these bags with dyed caribou hair flared and stitched in place and clipped to shapes leaves flowers etc ..took the place of bead work ..in 3d ..looked great ! I want a pouch/sporran a Bl Watch soldier might've traded to Mohawk lady during Mohawk Valley winter ..the Mohawks thought they were ..European "Indians" ..they also started carrying tomahawks ..
