Wearing the kilt in Germany or what to do without scottish roots!
Hi Guys,
hope to be right in this thread.
Kiltwearing in Germany is a special thing.
You usually have three possibilities being without schottish roots:
1. You are member of a pipe band
2. You do scottish dancing
3. You are into medieval or gothic stuff
Regarding the kilt as an usual garment and fine alternative to trousers produces sceptic and pityful glances.
I do have to confess that I don't have any scottish roots - as far as I know though I was running to the library permanently when I was a little boy to listen to some pipe music records - but wearing the kilt instead of trousers seems to be a desirable thing to me.
It's practical, elegant and looks great!
Being from Hamburg originally where people are often compared to the British it seemed not so strange to me but in the south of Germany the situation is quite different. A Challenge!
Although I don't want to play being scottish I was glad to find a Smith tartan as my name is Schmidt. And though of course I can't be a clan member - exerpt there is a clan who wants to adopt me ;-) - I found the tartans of MacDonald and Macpherson - the clans Smith is usually associated with - as another fruitful field to look for alternatives.
In this way also the Gow (which is Smith in Gaelic) would be fine...
To repeat it: without any ambitíon to play Scot but having a little hint how to find a matching tartan. (but there are so many fantastic tartans without any reference too....)
So...before finishing this long post I make a little list of my actual favourites :-)
- Smith modern
- MacDonald ancient
- Cameron of Erracht modern
- Macpherson hunting ancient
- Gow modern
- Stewart of Appin hunting modern
- Black Watch ancient
- Buchanan ancient
- solid dark green (as hiking kilt)
Thanks and see you soon,
Tom

There are several German members on this forum and I know that there are German tartans.
Here's a new one:- Neumann German Pipe Smokers Tartan

From the same page quoted above I keyed in the search word German and The Scottish Register of Tartans came up with German, German Heritage, German National, German American, German MacLeod, Hoffman Texas German and Langerman Anchorage.

I've also had very positive reaction when wearing a kilt in Germany. Planning to be kilted again in Nuremberg next month.

Im a Texan of German heritage myself so I have no claims to Scottish blood. Pretty much no mutt German.. You might enjoy getting the German Heritage from USA kilts. Rocky designed the tartan and they will make it up in the PV or wool kits. My tank made by Bonnie Heather Greene is the German Heritage. On cessna152towser's Google list you see "Hoffman Texas German". That is one I designed for my Texas/German heritage. Hasnt been made into cloth yet but I will one day. Ive also a hunting version with the main colors being the blue and black with red yellow and white as stripes. Not being Scottish Ive found there are many tartans I can and do wear. Black Watch is one, Black Stewart, Hamilton Grey, Saffron solid color, my tank in German Heritage, Modern Mackenzie (which seems to be popular for the over counter kilts sold in Scottish stores), XMarks tartan and there are others out there. To enjoy the kilt you dont need a clan affiliation, though it would be nice to have. I dare say Ill be the only Hoffman wearing my tartan when I have it made into a kilt, but thats ok. Main thing is to wear it well and wear it proud regardless of the tartan you pick.

Hey guys...
thanks for giving so many hint.
Actually I don't really have a problem wearing a tartan without connection...but I like Smith a lot :-)
I know German Heritage, I like it too but I think I won't order a kilt in the USA having UK between us ;-) The tartan is also available at Scotweb (MM Bute).
It's funny there is a German pipe smoker tartan because I smoke a good pipe from time to time....
@brewerpaul: it's good to see there are more kiltwearers without scottish roots
By the way...I believe people would react positively but talking about wearing kilts everyday makes them a bit confused..my experience. Maybe I know the wrong people for the topic ;-)

Hej Tom,
the Neumann tartan Alex mentioned is from my friend Marcus (pipemonk here at XMTS).
that one is mine http://www.tartanregister.gov.uk/tar...aspx?ref=10584
It's intended for my family, but is not restricted, so everybody can have it woven.
If all goes well a kilt in this tartan will ship tomorrow

A few months ago, I posted a census poll designed to find out just how many of our members are actually Scottish (or feel that way)... With 403 of our members voting (to-date), A whopping 26% have little to no connection whatsoever to Scottish roots or history, and simply enjoy wearing kilts for what they are. If we add to that number those who DO have direct Scottish connections but still aren't themselves Scottish or from Scotland, we are up to 91%.
So just know, that no matter where in this wide world you decide to kilt up, you'll be in good company, and need little justification to do so.
