my first box pleat kilt, very,,, eh fun. and sporran
hello,
threw out my kilt wearing years growing up, i have several times tried making my own kilt, some with good success so not so much ,lol, but i have always loved the look of box pleats and finally decided to give it a try.
i had a 2-3 yard chunk of double width light weight tartan so i cut it in half sewed the ends together and began the journey of box pleats. because of the limited fabric i had i decided to make it a "lil"kilt or phillabeg as i have seen them called.
i have not pressed down the pleats as of yet and not sure if i will but i did sew them down a bit from the waist band area.
also the sporran i made from elk leather after seeing the great ones you all made.
sorry for the not so good picts. as i was doing this alone.

from the Scottish Borders.
My initial thoughts were that the fringe was on the wrong side and I hesitated to say so, which was just as well as once I studied the picture again I noticed that you were holding the camera, so the photo is obviously a mirror image. Phew!
Well done.

Very nice job on the sporran and the tartan is lovely. I highly recommend Barb and Elsie's book, The Art of Kilt Making if you're serious about building a proper kilt (looks like you have a good start) and Matt Newsome's supplement to TAoKM which specifically covers box-pleated kilts.
Oh, and welcome to the madness!

Beatiful tartan. One question: Would the belt be more comfortable worn under the overlapped fabric?

i have tried it both ways and both seem the same comfort level, and the main reason i had two belts on is that i haven't decided how i want to secure it to finish it, i have a few options.
the cheater way velcro is easiest i can do a tie or and antler button on the left hip was a leather thong coming off the front apron and just wrap around the button once and it stays.
i don't want to do buckles. i mainly made this one as a test and beat around one, i won't mind spilling ale on it.
the tartan i got years ago when i worked at a place that used tartan imported from scotland but then switched to canada so not entirely sure what one this is. i have been trying to kind if and what clan it could be.
