Getting a Tartan Registered

Ok yet another noob question that has probably been answered and I can not find in the search. If one wanted to get a new tartan registered what is the process and what is considered to be a valid reason for having a registered tartan? I am asking because I had the thought that it would awesome if there was a tartan to represent the Field Artillery. Probably not a great reason but I like the Idea so I thought I would ask. Thanks again.

May I suggest you have a look at the registration process on the Scottish Register of Tartans website.

http://www.tartanregister.gov.uk/registerTartan.aspx

You will have to register with the site but it is free to do so.

There is a cost of 70 GBP to register a Tartan.

As a former Chief of Section, 8/4, 2/94 heavy artillery, I think a Field Artillery tartan is an excellent idea. When I get on one of the tartan design sites I play with this idea. Maybe after I hit the lottery. I would love to see your ideas.

You need to consider what you mean by register and for what purpose. This issue of ownership and copyright was recently discussed on XMarks and it’s worth reviewing that thread. Do you simply want to promote the existence of the design and associate you or whomever as the designer or do you want to protect the commercial rights to the design? If the former then you could simply send details to the Scottish Tartans Authority and it will be included on their website. Or you could opt for STR registration:

However, I would caution against this. Beyond getting the details on the STR website there is no benefit to wasting you money there. The STR offers no protection and is widely regarded by those in tartan academia as a flawed system run by people who know little about the subject, have a poor record of checking and who are principally interested in your money.

Protecting a design is a more costly option. In the UK it involved Design Registration with the Intellectual Property Office but in a case such as that you propose there is unlikely to be considerable commercial gain and I suggest that it would not be worth the cost.

I was not really thinking about any kind of financial or commercial gain I was more thinking about a design for Artillerymen like myself could wear and have it be recognized as the tartan for the Artillery. Sounds like it would be pretty difficult to get something like that produced. I will have to research it some more. Thanks for some good food for thought and a place to start.

Since the gold in the US Army tartan is meant to represent the cavalry, it seems the obvious thing to do would be to simply start with that tartan and change the gold to red.

Thats is a good thought. I hadn't considered that. I was simpy going for the Red and Gold that is used most often in all of the US Artillery. I will try your suggestion and see how that looks. Thanks Great Input!
