Need Help on the color of accessories

I have a Macneil of Barra ancient tartan kilt and wondering what color accessories would go best with it. Tweed Jacket and vest? Hose (and color of flashes that would look best) and balmoral bonnet? I am leaning to Lovat Blue or Lovat Green but would like to know what others think. I also have a Macneil of Barra Modern kilt ordered and have the same questions for that tartan.

Well, lovat blue and lovat green would work just fine, and these are color that are pretty easy to fine. You could also wear them with this same tartan in the modern colors, especially with a tweed jacket.

If you wanted to branch out from that, I think a nice yellow or mustard color hose would look great, and would accentuate the yellow stripe in the tartan -- again, either ancient or modern versions.

Then there are those neutral colors that tend to go well with anything. Grey hose, or a tan/oatmeal color. The House of Cheviot has a tan color they call bison that would work well for a casual look.

    Hi jmcneil62!

I am thinking about similar things having a Smith ancient kilt and planning a Smith modern.
Though Smith is a little more flexibel with it's red and yellow stripe it is very blue.
To bring out the blue of the kilt more clearly and not to be too blue I decided to buy a lovat green jacket. It's more the question if you like the contrast or having all in the same colour scheme.
    Both is fine...just personel taste.

Same thing with the darker modern colours (also in Smith modern).

Of course charcoal is very neutral with any colour...

My bonnet will be navy I guess. But there are many colours to combine...

Good luck and have fun while choosing!

    Tom

Lovat blue or Lovat green would be fine, as they tend to be very adaptive in the blue-green range of colours. They won't match anything exactly, but will blend in with everything.

However, I think over time you'll find that the overall presentation of all of this is a bit dull. It will be overload of the blue-green hues. If it were me, I'd go with a tweed jacket and waistcoat in something completely different. Like something in the grey scales. Or any shade of brown (from tan all the way to a dark brown). This will tend to accentuate the colours of your kilt, instead of blending it in like you'd do with the Lovat blue/green shades.

I'd do the same thing with hose. Matt's suggestion of the 'bison' colour is good. HoC also has a 'dark natural' that would work perfectly. As for flashes/garters, I'd go with red. This is traditional, even if red doesn't appear in your tartan, and you'll never have to worry about colour-coordinating or getting matchy-matchy. But yellow would be the best choice if you do want to match one of the colours in your tartan.

On the bonnet, that might depend on what you're doing with everything else. If you went with Lovat blue/green on your jacket, it would be best to go with something different on your bonnet. Like 'fawn' or 'navy'. But if you went with a grey or brown shade on the jacket, then a Lovat blue/green might be OK.

It's all up to you, of course, on how you want to look. Personally, I like alternating the colours. A Lovat blue/green bonnet can complement the kilt well, but not if there's a lot of blue or green in the jacket or hose.
