    Belt and buckle bumbling

OK, the search engine isn't helping me very much. I need some advice on buckles for day wear (for the most part). I am switching out my current belt for a new one. I would like the new belt to serve for day and more dressy affairs (shirt, tie and jacket). I have a waist plate which is OK, but maybe a little too much for bucking around. I would like ideas for something that would work for office and out and about... Photos, links, images? Please show me your buckles. With thanks for your help. lr

Daily I wear just a regular 1 3/4 wide brown belt with my Leadville Trail 100 buckle. I wore it with jeans, back when I wore jeans, and it is fine with a kilt. I keep the big "Kilt" belt and buckle for nicer occasions. I also wear a 2.5 inch black web belt and my nylon Stillwater day sporran when I wear my casual kilts on my walk to work or to the store.

Casual Saffron kilt with flannel shirt and wool vest. Belt is as described above.

With leather jacket ready for the pub. Ive always been a casual dresser even in the kilt.

If I'm understanding you correctly, you don't want a super-casual belt, but you also don't want anything that approaches 'formal'. Just something that's appropriate for smart daywear. That's a tough gap to fill, it seems. A lot of the belts/buckles out there seem to be most appropriate for either end of the scale, but not very well suited for the middle.

I had the same dilemma, and chose this buckle. It's nice enough that it doesn't scream "casual", but it's also not too dressy. I like that it's not perfectly rectangular. It has some shape to it, and it has a sort of 'antiqued' finish. I use it for everything from casual up to smart daywear, and tend to switch it out between different leather belts.

Downunder: The Mojo leathers are lovely. I'm caught between going with a belt like the one you are sporting or a more traditional belt like Tobus'. Mojo makes a very nice product.

Brewerpaul, very fine ideas there, too. I think that I'm looking for a wider belt. I sure like those by buckles.

Tobus: Yes it's a bit of a conundrum for me. I wonder where you sourced your belt and buckle?

At this point I'm trying to go with a belt and waist plate. But to be honest a lot of buckles are quite garish for me. Going with something like Mojo's belt with the stainless steel buckle is also a great contender.

Not sure what to do, yet.

The belt and buckle were a gift from my wife. She made the belt herself (including the custom tooling). As for the buckle, she cannot remember where she purchased it. But I'm pretty sure it was made by Heritage of Scotland (and it bears a "made in Scotland" stamp on the back). I don't see that exact buckle on their site, but they have one that's very similar. It just has a thistle motif in the center portion. You can get it in antique or chrome finish.

I hear ya. I really like the style of belt/buckle that is shown above by Mojo Leather. I've seen other vendors selling similar ones too. And a lot of guys wear that type belt when out-and-about at Highland Games and such. I am considering one like that myself, with brown leather and a brass buckle.

I too am a big fan of the Sam Browne buckle for kilt belts. I don't frequently wear a belt, but if I do it's usually a Sam Browne.

I make quite a few belts with them.

So Artificer and Tobus, do you think a black belt and Sam Brown buckle would be OK with an Argyle (I kinda think not but... maybe)? Better for day, I think. And Rondo, very nice... very nice indeed.

I'm going to look up the waist plate link, Tobus.

Honestly I'm not a great wearer of the belt. But there are times I think it helps with the transition between the kilt and shirt. I'm mostly a waistcoat guy. Right now, if you were to ask me, I'd say I really don't know where this is going to go. Sam Brown'ish or traditional kilt belt designed for wait plate.

    What are others doing?

I've also seen some nice round buckles with various celtic designs. Does the rabble think they would do day OK?

Great help you folks are. Thank you.

i have but do not wear a shiny plate and belt. instead, i have been wearing a police duty belt: http://www.officerstore.com/store/pr...rer_duty_belt/

but recognizing that it is time to upgrade some of my kit past the basics and after been reimbursed for post hurricane clean up, i am awaiting delivery for this: http://www.tartanweb.com/product/322...og-belt-buckle
and this http://www.tartanweb.com/product/316...ssed-kilt-belt (when you get to check out, since there is no vat if shipped to the u.s., the cost is less than that)

i had seen the picture tobus posted (or something similar) before and really liked the embossed belt and pewter buckle, but i liked the celtic dogs buckle a bit more than the antiqued plate.
