    inexpensive hose?

any suggestions on inexpensive hose? just traded in the utilikilt i've had for about four years and worn about four times for a stillwater standard kilt in mackenzie. hopefully this one will get worn more often--the missus, she protests--but it presents a bit of an accessory problem. not too worried about a sporran, i've got some leather and am almost positive i can turn out something presentable--thinking rob roy here--but i'm not quite so handy with a pair of knitting needles. casting about the net has produced kilt hose from 60gbp to 5usd. any suggestions on what to go with? i've got about a $25 limit here.

With the Stillwater MacKenzie you can never go wrong with Lovat Blue or Green. I think they are universal for most anything. A burgundy, claret or brick red will also go well with the red stripe in the kilt. USA kilts has kilt hose at 20 bucks a pair and they are 70% wool 30% nylon. Below that you get thin usually 30%wool and 70% nylon hose so spend a couple extra and they will last you a good while. Even a charcoal gray is classy if you wear some brighter flashes or garter ties with them.

I'd suggest one or two pairs of lovat green hose, which goes with everything. Shop with our fine Xmarks sponsors, they will probably run about $20 a pair. You can get nicer ones later, and don't overlook the possibility of knitting your own.

If anyone in your family knits at all, or you have a spool knitter, you could make some garter ties. Otherwise some flashes (which come with garters to hold up your socks) are advised. Red is the default color; blue or green will also look nice with the MacKenzie.

In short, lovat green hose and red flashes will server you well for almost anything.

another vote for sockdreams. do a search for kilt socks.

also, this weekend i received these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/KILT-SCOTTIS...item51a1dbd473

whose label says: stockings men thin wool/nylon stone ... which i would describe as plain, thin, brownish-grey color hose for casual kilt wear. comfy and should "go"with just about anything. they might not be good year round in the north, but down here i probably will wear them through all seasons for informal occasions.

and kilted carver still has some in the for sale section.
