Smile Holyrood tartan - what color kilt hose? Advice?

First off, if this is the wrong area, please let me know or moderators, would you kindly move this??

Now that we have that out of the way... A family member just got the Holyrood kilt from USA Kilts.

Looking for some Lewis Kilt hose. Something that doesn't clash or scream out too loud. Just something that matches a bit. Think that a Lovat Blue would match?? Any other ideas on which Lewis might match well?

Gosh, pretty much any colour would work ( except white, of course ). Some of us don't put too much stock in all this matching business.

Blues, greys, browns, reds (especially claret),yellows all would work well.

Since you wrote "matches a bit", and assuming you are confining your choices to those shown on the Amazon page, I would go with any of the blue shades or ecru. I like ecru, because it highlights the white overstripes. See the wild Scotsman (my brother) in his USA Kilts Holyrood below.

I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

I quite agree. Various shades of green would be worth a thought too.

Oatmeal / stone / tan color would get my vote.

That's what I was thinking too. A nice shade of green would complement the tartan without matching. I actually prefer colours that complement rather than match. Unfortunately, HoC has decided to abandon a lot of colour choices in their Lewis line of hose. Ancient green is about the only shade of green left, except for tartan green (which I personally don't think would work that well with this tartan, though you may).

However, if you switch from the Lewis line to the Rannoch line, there are several attractive colour options in green, such as bracken, dark loden, and moss. Plus my favourite of the brown hues, dark natural. As much as I like the Lewis hose, my next purchase will probably be Rannoch just because of the colours available. It's also worth noting that the Glenmore line has bison available, which is another nice brown colour that would go well with this tartan.

FWIW, the Holyrood tartan (if it really looks like it does above) seems to be in a similar colourway as the "weathered" or "reproduction" tartans, which I think look great with any earthy colour hose. For a visual example, here's a tartan in reproduction colours paired with HoC's dark natural hose. You can see that it's not a perfect colour match, but it works fine. I think you'd get the same effect from the Holyrood tartan, or close enough.

Medium to darker brown, marled if possible. Tobus has a nice pair on in his pic.

Darker hose allow the lighter kilt to shine in all its tartan glory.

I vote for white.... or "off white".

Or gray or blue or oatmeal or whatever seems good to you.
