    Highland games Bridge of Allan

    Merry Christmas all!
My Darling Wife presented me with a trip to The Allan Highland Gatherings 2013 and of course the editing question is giving the kilt an airing. Would I be out of place in:
Black barathea argyll jacket and waist coat, white shirt, club tie, semi dress sporran (metal cantle) clan cufflinks, black hose, green flashes to match my Lamont modern kilt and black ghillies.

This is as informal as my collection goes, will it pass or will I look out of place?

It would seem to me that you would be very well kitted out. You will probably see a lot less formal outfits at the games but I would not consider your outfit "out of place"

I'd opt for anything besides black hose. The rest sounds fine.

I'm not familiar with the games to which you refer, but you'd be overdressed at any games I ever attended. I'm with Brewerpaul on the black hose. Give them away and forget you ever saw them.

Thank you gentlemen snappy responses as ever. What kind of things would you normally expect Bob, how informal dar I go? I do tend to air on the side of formal generally. I will look into coloured or diced hose, may make a nice change.

It could well be that your outfit is just the thing for games in Scotland. T-shirts, polo shirts or plain collared shirts (without jackets) are the norm here in the states. You'd roast in August in an Argyll jacket here in upstate NY. Maybe it's cooler in Stirling.

Bridge of Allan, Scotland? In Scotland you will stick out like a sore thumb as a spectator wearing the kit that you suggest. Just by wearing the kilt you will be in the minority. Unless you are part of the VIP guest list and they will mostly wear tweed jackets, then wear the kilt with sturdy walking shoes(proper brogues , not those ghillie things), better a plain leather sporran(but don't worry about it), plain coloured hose(not black or white), open necked shirt(tie optional with top shirt button done up) and a pullover(sweater)will do you nicely. Make sure you have wet weather gear handy too!

I posted some photos from the 2009 Bridge of Allan Highland Games on this thread:-

As you can see it was mostly the pipe band members who wore the more formal highland outfits. You will need a stout pair of boots as the field can be muddy. Have fun!

The outfit does seem a little bit too formal to be honest. If you can get a tweed jacket (Lovatt green?) Hector Russell do nice jackets at a reasonable price, and maybe green hose that would be less formal.
Jock Scot says you would be in the minority as a spectator wearing The Kilt and I think that is really sad, but unfortunately true in Scotland it would seem.

There's plenty of kilted spectators here! and the guy in the Buchanan plaid is fantastic. Also, you couldn't be more overdressed than the guy in the 'cowboy' hat. Wear your kilt with pride and have a great time.
