    A Hunting Kilt

    Good evening,
I tried searching for a related topic but couldn't find one so I figured I'd just start a new thread. I'm looking to purchase a new kilt to use for hunting, I already have a nice PV Douglass Ancient as well as a PV Blackwatch. What I'm currently looking for is to purchase a kilt that I would be able to use for hunting and blend in a little bit more with my surroundings than what I would in a Douglass ancient, so does anybody have any suggestions for a good natural looking, probably more muted, tartan that would be good for hunting up here in the great woods of Pennsylvania. As a side note I am uninterested in actual camouflage as this is something that I will be wearing outside of hunting as well.

I don't know your terrain, but any greenish tartan will do and at certain times of the year I have even seen red tartans blend in to an extent out on the hill. Tweed in kilt form would be well worth a thought as we use various "estate" tweeds(the original camouflage) to blend into the surroundings and it is amazing how something stands out almost as a clown outfit on Inverness High St., but blends in with the suroundings when out on the hill. As you no doubt know only too well, it is movement that is the usual giveaway.

I'm with Jock on this one. Tweed. Good, earthy tweed.

***. Tweed. Also, you might want to look at many of the weathered tartans, such as weathered MacKenzie, Blackwatch, etc. Their muted appearance would go well in the woods. Finally, if late fall, a weathered Maple Leaf might fit right in.

If you are not concerned with any specific clan affiliated tartan, Rocky at USAKilts has a nice Weathered Scott PV tartan that would likely fit the bill nicely. You might also consider the Tara (Murphy). Depending on the time of year, and natural abilities of the game you pursue (color blind or ). As MNlad alluded to, a kilt for each season may be in order..... I know, any excuse right?!

There are a lot of tartans that will do what you want. Some of the online kilt makers have tartan finders with images. Snoop around and you'll see a lot.

I'd not get anything other than wool, and heavy wool at that. You'll be prone to snagging in the woods, and you want the kilt to hold up.

Not sure why you want to hunt in a kilt, but as someone who does a lot of hunting, it's not practical. Skeet, sporting clays, the range; no problem. Thorns, stickers, ticks, cold-breeze-in-a-treestand,.....the list goes on,....no way.

The cost of a nice kilt keeps them out of the woods too.

What flairball said...I am wearing a nice Realtree box pleat this morning that would be a flat pain in the woods...If I were going to have a hunting kilt I would make it out of a heavyish duck in whatever print you like...carrhart tan for instance...and a quilted hollofil liner...lol

Yes, the terrain of the woods and some of the pests that come along with it were certainly concerns I initially had as well, so to see if a kilt would hold up well enough and do the trick I've wearing it exclusively on my monthly camping trip and so far so good. I certainly wouldn't walk through a pricker bush with it on intentionally, but then again I would try to avoid doing so in jeans as well. I have to say though, a treestand and a kilt just don't sound okay haha.

You can wear a kilt hunting, with some considerations. I, too, would go with the heaviest wool tartan you can afford. Our N. American underbrush is a bit harsher than what's encountered in the Scottish Highlands! Do what the highlanders who came over in the 1750s did, when they had to go on scouts into the woods - wear gaiters or leggings:
