Before the days of velcro
How would you like to go through this each time you put your kilt on?

Well it was a Scotsman who invented Velcro. Got the idea when thistles stuck to the wool. Bit of trivia.

nice set of pix BTW great info.
but here's the real way velcro was invented, also the Canadians will claim this invention too.
One lovely summer day in 1948, a Swiss amateur-mountaineer and inventor decided to take his dog for a nature hike. The man and his faithful companion both returned home covered with burrs, the plant seed-sacs that cling to animal fur in order to travel to fertile new planting grounds. The man neglected his matted dog, and with a burning curiosity ran to his microscope and inspected one of the many burrs stuck to his pants. He saw all the small hooks that enabled the seed-bearing burr to cling so viciously to the tiny loops in the fabric of his pants. George de Mestral raised his head from the microscope and smiled thinking, "I will design a unique, two-sided fastener, one side with stiff hooks like the burrs and the other side with soft loops like the fabric of my pants. I will call my invention 'velcro' a combination of the word velour and crochet.

Great kilt
Wow!!
I can certainly see how the old great kilts were so well suited to the Scottish Highlands, which I'm told has a very similar mild drizzly climate to my native Oregon.
You can also say alot for the simplicity of this garment.....No cutting, sewing or any kind of tailoring involved in it, just weaving the fabric itself.
It looks incredibly troublesome to put one on in our eyes, but I bet you those old celts get pleated and wrapped up in no time at all!!
How did they get the pleats to stay in place with only a belt? You would think after moving around all day they would get pulled apart
Thanks for the link

As a wearer of a Great Kilt, I get mine pleated within a few minutes. There is a reason why there are stripes in the tartans. As for getting the pleats to stay with a belt, all you need is a 3 inch wide belt that has an adjustable buckle. A Great Kilt is alot easier to put on than it looks.

You can see how this would make a
great blanket to sleep in or a
hood to keep off the elements.
I have to agree with Al, there isn’t a
field big enough for me!

Re: Before the days of velcro
I had one of these, thinking it would be fun for parties, etc., but I never got to wear it (never get invited to parties, that's the trouble!!). They really are suitable only for re-enactment society wear and are not right for popping down to Tescos on Thursday afternoons!
Instead of letting it moulder away in a cupboard, I cut it in half and had a modern 8 yard kilt made up from it. At least I get to wear it now!
