Pastors and Clergy

I have noticed a lot of our members (well a few anyway) are in the Faith profession and are Pastors or the like. I think that is great considering there is probably a contigency of conservitive religious folk who would nay say against kilt wearing.

Can anyone give us any insight into how they feel about kilts in a regular church setting?

I go to a really contemporary church but I still havent worn a kilt. They know that I keep threatening though (they chalk it up to me being an eccentric musician I think!)

A friend of mine goes to a United Church here in Toronto. he and many members of the congregation (there are a lot of old Scots) regularly wear their kilts to church.

My father in law is a pastor (I always said I'd marry a vicars daughter ) and he doesn't seem to mind. Although I never have asked him!
When I see him and I'm in my kilt he just seems vaguely amused and says 'has she, (his daughter, my wife), made you wear that'.

I don't think anyone in my parish would mind. I think I might wear mine to the St. Patrick's day mass. We're lucky enough to have 2 Irish priests (not Irish-American).

Heck, I went to the midnight Christmas service in my best kilt. Of course, they expect such things out of me.

I'm sure that "The Big Guy" would have considered a kilt if they had been around back then. Who knows, we might have even had "The Book of Angus". I would swap a Judas for a Seamus ANY DAY! There could have been multitudes fed by one Haggis!

The possibilities are endless!

My pastor's fine with as is a local politically active pastor. The only problem I've encountered from anybody is my dad who claims I'm an abomination. That hurts, but life goes on in Jesus.

I am a musician/cantor in a small Roman Catholic community. I wear my kilts regularly. There are a few situations when I don't wear the Kilt, but that's my own self imposed choice based on not wanting to distract people from the service. I get pretty much the same reaction from people at church that I do anywhere else, some are confused and some are enthused.

I pastor a small local fellowship of the Church of God. For the last few weeks I've begun wearing my kilt to the service.
The only negative attitude has been from an Irishman, I feel he may bear a little resentment from his childhood days in Ireland, being forced to wear a kilt. But that's not really an issue.

I have friends who attend other churches in a kilt without any problems from other church goers.

The Christian church generally has a firm position on men wearing "that which pertaineth to a woman" ie womans' clothes. However, since the kilt is universally accepted as a male garment, that is no problem. The other theological issue is one of modesty. Most conservative churches frown on clothes that are too revealing, sensuous or "worldly".

The kilt fits into none of those catergories, it is non-worldly, very modest and non revealing (provided the wind doesn't blow).

Personally, I am not surprised by the high proportion of Christian believers among the ranks of kiltmen, after all, many pioneers in fields of science, invention, medicine etc have been men and women of faith, so I think it proper for us to be involved in a revival concerning kilt wearing.
Revival is what we do!!

Graham, you and I will probably disagree about numerous things. They shut down our last thread. That being said, I like to have my beliefs and assumptions challenged. I enjoy having the opportunity to have a civillized discussion with you. You kilt, ergo you are open minded. I was raised by liberal journalists, went to Catholic school for 9 years (4-12), and now am somewhere between liberation theology (radical S.A. Catholics) and secular humanism, and the general philosophy of treat others as you would be treated. (Which is the most important lesson in my bibles. IMHO)

So now that you know where I am coming from, I want to ask you two questions, and ask everyone else not to jump in until you have had a chance to reply.

1) Where's the dogma for the clothing? I don't know much about the church of God. What are some of the major tenets? Where did it come from? It seems to me that clothes were pretty simple, almost unisex, when most, if not all, of the bible was written.

2) Censorship. If this is off limits from our "closed" thread, OK. But when is it a good idea to tell humanity that we can't use the free will which God granted us and express ourselves?
