How many pleats in your kilt?.

I just thought I'd count the number of pleats in my Welsh kilt and find there are 30 ranging in depth between three and a half inches and three inches. Is that about average? Never thought about it before.

I'm suffering deja vu here Derek. I'm sure I've just answered this question somewhere.

I think it depends on how the kiltmaker works out the math. I have one with 30 or so pleats at 3" to 3.5" and one with 24 deeper pleats at 4" to 4.5"... same tartan set, different kiltmaker. Both look and move well.

Depending on the kilt, I have between 26-31 pleats 5.5 inches deep,a full sett.

30 pleats each on my Stillwater Royal Stewart, and Black watch, 2 1/2" to 2 3/4" deep.
The new ( ) Black Stewart that just arrived has 27 pleats almost universally 3 inches deep.

Mine has 30 pleats that run about 3 3/4". Not to insult anyone out ignorance, but would waist size have some effect on number of pleats and depth? Another item to keep in mind is that not all kilts start with 8 yards of cloth.

There are a number of factors; pleated to the stripe, pleated to the sett. How wide the sett is. The number of pleats would be based on the widest part of the lower body in most cases that would be the hip measurement. On average there are about 9 pleats per sett pattern with the repeat happening every 15cm. Having said that the range of patterns is 8cm - 24. and to cut down on the weight of the kilt some makers will make 6-7 pleats per sett (on a 15cm sett).
