My thrift store finds - post any you find too!
In light of all the conversations about how expensive this way of dressing is and in the spirit of being frugal (sounds so much nicer than cheap) I will start this thread to give people an idea of what is out there in the wild. These are things that I have purchased in Southern California at various second hand/thrift stores. I have done "costuming" for years for various events. I have a collection of thing in boxes, as I went through them I found a few interesting things which I will post over the next few days. I also have purchased "new" things over that last few weeks.
Being a "lady" gives me a bit of leeway in what is appropriate for me to wear, I've read all the post about lasses' wear.
There will be some finds for my husband too.
If you find anything in the wild feel free to post it in this thread! I'd love to see what others come up with.
My introduction to the forum came when I found this;

Right now I am working on refitting this new to me pleated skirt, it it a bit big in the waist and too long. It is made in Great Britain, 100% wool woven cloth from Edinburgh Woolen Mill. I have never cut down a pleated skirt with an invisible zipper and am finding the task daunting. If I ruin it I am out $1.91 plus tax.

Will post more things as I get to it!

That's an awesome find! Is it a particular tartan?
Do you mind posts of fabric recovery and reuse?

$15 for the tux and pants that gave their lives for Bob's formal kilt jacket, as detailed in this thread.
I do more online bargain hunting than thrift-shopping, due to all sorts of circumstances, but there are a few that we hit every year while vacationing in San Clemente -- usually good for a Hawaiian shirt or two, but nothing kilt-related yet!

The would be great! I have a few things that I will be up-cycling. I have plans for a few skirt I have acquired, I'm not much of a skirt wearer.
It's Royal Stewart. It seems to be easy to find.

This Harris Tweed jacket (not the rest of the outfit) was found at a Salvation Army store for $2.50USD (it was originally $5.00USD )
The entire right side and bottom was snagged and pulled. We think from cat sharpening claws. So I converted it, cut off the bottom, raised the pocket flaps, and repaired the snags and pulls.

Good save Kiltboy! The only Harris Tweed we have seen was too small for hubby and the material was incredibly stiff and rough. I though it would be softer, maybe that jacket had been starched? Love that kilt!

I found this tweed jacket at Salvation Army. Too small for me but I wasn't looking for a jacket to wear. I tore it down for the fabric. Some of it has gone into my tweed sporran. Still have quite a bit left. Might make a flat cap or balmoral from the rest.
For some reason this photo of the jacket shows the color much more than natural light. The sporran photo is more realistic.

And so you gents won't feel left out right off the bat....
This a a very well loved sweater that hubby liked. It is 85% wool and 15% nylon. It appeared very dirty in the store, the cuffs had visible dirt on them. To say it was dirty turned out to be an understatement, the water turned coffee color as soon as the sweater was immersed. It took three washings to get clear water. It is a bit pilly and worn looking which doesn't bother hubby, he likes the well lived in look. I think it would look great with a kilt. The outlay was $3.00.
