Sizing of Kilts Among Different Brands

I'm curious as to how different kilt manufacturers run. I currently own a Utilikilt and wear 36 and 23. Would I order the same size from different brands? I especially would love to hear from those who own a Utilikilt in addition to other brands. Thank you!

Many of the sellers that advertise here have a guide for where to measure. Utilikilts are worn at the hips like jeans where as a traditional kilt is measured at the true waist just above your belly button.

Yup. Each maker will have specific guidelines on how to measure for their products. It's important that you follow their directions and not try to use someone else's measuring system. Especially when comparing something like a UK that isn't worn or measured the same as a traditional kilt. But even amongst traditional kilt makers, it can be different.

If in doubt, call and ask them. That's much easier than guessing and getting it wrong.

Sound advice all. Let's just hope one man's inch is the same as another's (pun not intended).

One more thing, possibly more important...after you find out where to measure, have someone else do it, and do it at least twice. When I was measured for my tank by the maker's agent, I questioned the length because I felt it was too short. Good thing I followed along, or I would be wearing a cute little tartan dress, LOL!

I just measured myself for an Amerikilt. I was pretty much the same size except an inch shorter. Utilikilts go just past the knee while Amerikilts go to the middle of the knee.

Measuring yourself for length can be exceedingly tricky. I think it's Rocky who suggests using a bath towel (my apologies if this tip came from elsewhere).

Stand straight up before a full-length mirror and hold the towel, or other length of cloth, in front of you. Fold the top edge until the towel is the desired kilt length, from specified waist level to desired knee "hit." Then carefully lay the towel out flat on floor, table, etc. and measure that length.
