First Kilted to Work Friday

Received the clearance to come to work this Friday Kilted, I played the William Wallace Day card.

We have strict rules regarding proper attire due to our Lab and Press floor.
I was just told to keep out of the Lab, which will be no problem.

Now the big question is... keep it casual or semi dress.
Thinking semi dress is a sharper look... what says the rabble?

In your case......First impressions mean a lot, especially with you receiving the ok for this Friday being your first. You can always go casual at a later Friday after "breaking the ice". Just a simple opinion from a "newer member".

Excuse my ignorance, are we talking semi dress as in semi formal, cause when I punch semi dress into the WWW every hit relates to semi formal. Can someone explain the diffrence between semi dress and semi formal?
In Australia we tend to group attire into casual, business and formal.

Definitely go for a dressier look.

When I first received authorization for wearing kilts on our "casual Fridays", I dressed it up quite a bit. Now, a couple of years later, I can go as casual as a 5.11 TDK with a t-shirt and hiking boots plus scruched down hose, should I so desire. I have done so a couple of times, simply "because", but my preferred is what might be considered "business". For non-kilties, that would be nice slacks and a nice shirt (polo, buttons, etc -- no t-shirts). Note: Friday casual here allows shorts and t-shirts even, provided they are not worn, torn, etc. and the t-shirts do not have controversial slogans or sayings (manager discretion).

A key item is to be able to educate about your attire. What defines a "kilt" vs. a "skirt". Which tartan you are wearing and why. Why do you have a purse (sporran) in the front. Ad infinitum.

My one caution is to get your sgian dubh preauthorized (assuming you are wearing one). Some places are pretty picky about pointy things -- even ones with itty bitty blades - lol.

Aye's to all the input... my thoughts exactly, dress to impress.

As far as definitions on dress, I'd say semi dress would be compared to as Business. Although one mans Business attire may consist of a jacket and tie, while mine is a collard button up shirt and trousers. Any one of the three Downunder mentioned could have 2 sides. Casual to my Brother in law is a polo, dockers and loafers... mine is flipflops, shorts and T-shirt.

My office is a melting pot of nationalities, Engineers from US, Japan, and Sri Lanka. Chemists from Germany, Norway, China and Ukraine. I'm betting this will open up some interesting cultural conversations.
