    Sherrifmuir Jacket

I can't believe I am posting in this forum after swearing over a year ago I'd never come back...but here goes:
I am considering a Sherrifmuir Jacket in black or Navy blue barethea wool. Would this combination of cut and cloth work for a.) Black tie b.) formal day wear c.) how far down can it be dressed?

I don't wear waistcoats, will be worn with appropriate kilt belt and accessories. TIA

    Rondo

P.S. I don't care for the look/cut of the argyle jacket.

    Welcome home Rondo! Sincerely.

I am a Sheriffmuir owner (black) and it will easily go as high as white-tie equivalent - I have a lace jabot and cuffs from Keltoi which easily push it to the very top. However... because it is more traditional, it can be work to black-tie, or even, with a wee bit of dress down for daywear.

    I love mine!

    Cheers!

Thanks Padre, that was my thought. I remember Matt's Tweed Sherrifmuir seemed capable of nearly anything. I'll never need to go up to white tie, but nice to know i could.

Not likely to wear the lace often, but I just love it so very much - couldn't turn it down. Contact John if you're interested. I think he even has a set in stock.

Whilst I think a Sherrifmuir Jacket in black or Navy blue barethea wool can be dressed up or down for any formal occasion (day or night) outside of the formal enviroment it would be overdressing. Matts was a tweed one which I think can add some more versitility outside of the formal atmosphere

A Sheriffmuir doublet in black barathea with white metal buttons (like Father Bill's) is traditionally only suitable for formal evening wear, either white or black tie. A Sheriffmuir in navy (or midnight) blue with white metal buttons is the same deal. I've seen plenty of people wearing formal evening wear during the day and/or at non-formal events, but that doesn't make it traditional...

If, however, you fitted one of those jackets with buttons that can be swapped between white metal and something less formal (brass or cloth-covered) then you might be able to stretch to very dressy day wear too. I think the dark blue would probably work better for this. Not sure about the traditional-ness of this option, but I've heard of it being done with a dress Argyll jacket.

My Sheriffmuir is charcoal tweed, which definitely helps me to dress it down if I want to. I think it would be a bit more difficult to successfully dress it down if it were black, especially if it had bright chrome buttons. A navy doublet might be dressed down more easily.

This is about as dressed down as I have worn my Sheriffmuir.

    Yes . . .

. . . perhaps I'm being unfair to give the impression I would wear that for daywear. I also have a grey tweed crail for that purpose.

    Other colors work!

Not sure how I'd go about about dressing it down further though.
