    Full time Kilt Wearers.

Any full time kilt wearers in here? I'm seriously considering going "full time" and I want to learn about some peoples experiences with wearing the kilt full time. How many kilts do you own and what Tartans and how often do you rotate them. What do you wear with your kilts and how were you received by family, friends, colleagues once you decided to go full time? Pics would be appreciated too. IMG_4777.jpg

For a year and a half I wore kilts 5 or 6 days a week at work. I have 5 kilts of which only 4 were suitable for work wear [the 5th being a historical philabeag]. Of the four I wore routinely one is Spirit of Scotland [wool blend], two are PV one Holyrood and one US Navy Edzell, and a Kingussie wool tank in Ancient Dunbar. I wore wing collars with long ties and a silk or satin waistcoat [as an outer garment] no jacket, wool hose pulled up but sans flashes, always wore a blanket style kilt pin and a black/brown hand tooled sporran.

I have been well received by family, friends, and customers alike. I was managing a bar/restaurant [my own] and set the dress code myself. None of my employees were comfortable enough to follow my lead.

Not all the pics are dressed for work but I'm sure you get the idea. Hope this helps some. Since I no longer have the bar/restaurant I don't have the luxury of being kilted full time.

I've worn kilts full time for years and years and have never had a negative encounter. Sure there have been the few loudmouth dimwits but I pay them less attention then I would a minor itch. As far as what I wear with them, just about anything goes I don't subscribe too heavily in the idea of making the kilt a stereotypical "Look at me I'm Scottish" kind of thing, but rather and much more simply an "I'm just a guy in a kilt" kind of thing.

I've starting wearing Kilts whenever I'm not working. I have a dress code at work for safety reasons. I currently have 7 kilts, 2 of the Budget kilts from Buyakilt.com Irish Heritage and Black Stewart. 2 Budget kilts from HoS in the "Freedom" tartan and Ramsey Blue. I have one USAK Semi-Trad in Holyrood and 2 USAKs casuals , Fraser Hunting and Douglas Ancient. With the very warm summer we're having here in Reno I pretty much grab the USAK casual each morning. I've not had a single negative or belittling comment, I've had quite a few positive comments and a few "wish I could do that" comments. I have to wear compression stockings for health reason so I always wear kilt hose' and flashes with both oxfords and with my boots. For shirts I'm kinda of a cotton polo guy not too much into wearing just a T-shirt thing. I have found that I really do like the feel and look of the "Dickies" work shirt with the kilt also.Stewart Black.jpgKilted Saturday.jpg

I wear my kilts more than anything else and have done so for about two years now, I find that once you get used to the looks and random people having a chat or asking to take a pic with you it's fine. I have 13 kilts, 3 PV and the rest 16oz wool in 5, 6, 8 and 9 yards of tartan wool. I do put each of my kilts out on the clothesline every couple of days depending on what I was wearing that week, to air them out and to keep the moths at bay.

Ditto. I avoid any semblence of a "costume" like the plague.

I wear cilts/kilts full time .. have done now for nearly two years ... never had any problem with the wife, family or friends. I have 5 cilts ... always dress very casual and comfy .. smart casual max (which for me is just adding shirt n tie). I just go about everyday life no different to having jeans on.

I went through a phase of full time kilted for a few years.
Mostly casual, trad and non-trad kilts though I had this more formal outfit for the office and for sitting as District Court Assessor, comprising black Argyle jacket and an all black 8-yard heavyweight wool kilt.

During 2009 I took early retirement from the law and went to a vocational driving school to qualify as a bus driver. I had envisaged driving tour buses, however I find myself driving service buses or school transport, or occasionally a vintage double decker, for none of which the kilt is practicable and these days the trousers have come back into use most days with the kilts being worn mainly at weekends and on days off.

I'm an ex-full-time kilt wearer. When I started, I was the only man working in an office of women, and they had no problems at all. In fact, when I left that job, on my last day all the women wore tartan skirts and knee socks in order to join the fun. The rest of my work was in a restaurant and because the dress code was to wear the company shirt and khaki bottoms, I was able to wear a khaki Utilikilt. My co-workers thought it was great and supported me wholeheartedly. During that time I also spent nearly a year and a half (and 7,000 miles) backpacking outdoors, and wore a kilt almost the whole of that time, through all weather and terrain.

I started my kilt collection slowly, but now own two wool kilts, three P/V kilts, and two Utilikilts. Starting out I'd try not to wear the same kilt twice in a row but honestly, why not? Most people wouldn't expect you to have more than one (or wouldn't think about it). As long as you change shirts and hose I don't think anyone would give it two thoughts.

As to what I wear with them: pretty much anything that I'd wear with anything else. When it's hot out I rock the kilt, t-shirt, and sandals combination. The kilt is a garment, not a costume, so just wear it.

What a great thread! It pushes me to get out in my kilts more, whether or nut it's full time. Thanks!
