Jimmy, just saw this. Sorry but hadn't logged in for a while. Next time, send me a PM and I'll be happy to meet if I can. Kilted outings to Murrayfield coming up next month if you're interested.
I met an interesting couple (Scottish husband, Bulgarian wife, American children) today and of course the subject of Scotland always having so much difficulty qualifying came up. The wife said as far as she knows the last time Bulgaria qualified was 1994. When last did Scotland qualify? (EDIT: 1998.)
Contrast this to the seemingly easy path the USA has every four years! (EDIT: the USA qualified for the last 6 World Cups.) We have to overcome perennial football giants such as Costa Rica and Jamaica

1998 France. Beginning to wonder if I will ever attend another in my lifetime...
Now that's just sad. Seems like no matter how the countries are grouped, Scotland is in the position of having to beat quality opponents; the USA not so much.

We don't have much luck, that's for sure. I remember one campaign (unfortunately I don't remember the year (maybe 1998)) when we managed to qualify for the final stages and during the final stages we never lost a match and STILL didn't get out of the pools!
