    Heritage of Scotland Kilt Reviews?

Has anyone tried one of the 5 yard Kilt's by John Morrison from Heritage of Scotland? They have it priced at about $200 with free worldwide shipping. I'm looking to get a Hunting Scott Ancient kilt (I'm a huge Tunes of Glory fan and I think it would make a great inside joke at the next piping competition) and they have it in stock.

I'm just a little leery of spending ~$200 plus the 2-3 months waiting to get a crappy kilt.

You get what you pay for. I have an 2 8yds one was and the other soon will be rebuilt. They lack internal stability, and the pleats stretch and deform over time. As a side note U.S. customs or fed ex will most likely charge you an import fee as well. IMHO you'll pay about the same over all if tou order from USAK and you will know the price up front and you can depend on the quality you're going to get.

I have a thread in the Contemporary section talking about a Heritage of Scotland kilt rebuild. The original was nice for what it was, but it never really seemed right. For the cost it's certainly decent but you may find that you end up having some after market work done on it such as installing stabilizers etc.

I have never purchased anything from Heritage of Scotland, thus I have no first-hand experience to offer. Andy's admonition, "You get what you pay for." is worth taking under advisement, particularly from a vendor for whom you have little, or no, knowledge or experience. My advice is to stick with vendors who advertise on XMTS or for whom you have good experience.
I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

Have never owned anything from Heritage of Scotland but I would certainly listen to Wolfmans advice. A couple of years ago a member of this forum acquired two of the kilts and provided photos for our perusal

I have been a customer of Heritage of Scotland many times and can honestly say that I have had value for money every time.

Among my growing kilt wardrobe I have four 8yd Polyviscose kilts from HoS, that were each well under $100. They make reasonable "stunt doubles" when pubbing, at cookouts or hiking, or other times when I don't wish to put my good wool kilts at risk. I've no experience with HoS's wool kilts, however. Like Chas, I believe I got value for my money. But again I qualify by saying my HoS kilts were PV, and not wool.

I've had two PV kilts from them for about £30/40 and they were as good as you could expect them to be for the money and useful in certain circumstances: quite smart.

I paid £120 for a grey kilt, 5yd made to measure, may be good PV but claims to be wool. No complaints.

I paid £165 for a 5 yard wool Loud Macleod. Was supposed to be 13oz but is actually 10oz. I should have complained but I liked it a lot.

The 5 yard wool measure kilts look nice enough but have no proper canvas lining. I'm still complemented on how smart they are however.

I have an 8 yard PV economy kilt from HoS, in Mackenzie modern. For what it would cost (about £40 I think) it's OK for knocking about in when I don't want to risk my ex-military. the pleats are machine stitched and don't all lie well after a day's wear but being PV, do mostly drop straight on the hanger.

It's rather a strange pleating pattern on the back, not sure if you'd call it to the block or the half sett, Mackenzie is somewhat asymmetric, one red line every other white line, and thus, an extremely wide sett (red to red). They are best pleated to the white line but this is pleated to white set, hiding the red vertical lines. The result is uneven pleating, every fourth pleat it wider than the other three! Decidedly odd but not really noticeable except to regular kilt wearers and certainly passes with non-kilt wearers. But probably worth what it would cost.

I was thinking of getting it rebuilt, since the cloth is quite respectable, interesting to see that others have done the same.

I've no idea what their wool kilts would be like but at around half the price of a hand stitched bespoke, you'd probably want to check carefully. Across the Atlantic, I'd probably talk to some of the X-Marks kiltmakers first.

    Your mileage may vary!
    Regards, Sav.

    HoS PV kilt pleates

I have two HoS 8 yd PV kilts, about $50US each including shipping to the USA. Pleating shown in the photos (note that these are recently worn so please disregard the dog hair and wrinkles!). At the price point, no complaints. The fabric is heavy, lots of pleats, and for round town or to the pub they are fine.
