My Fathers Things
This is a collection of items my Father gave to me. I was asked to find a new owner for his things, because I know how to use a computer and he barely knows how to use a remote for his TV. I don't have any idea what its worth may or may not be. His dirk I have spent a month trying to figure out when it was made and I can't find an answer. Please don't ask me to sell something as I need to comply with the 10 post rule and this is not an attempt to get around that rule. I just need help trying to figure it all out for my dad. I wish I had a couple thousand to give him and just keep it all without telling him but I just don't. Scott017.jpg042.jpg030 (2).jpg027.jpg023.jpg021.jpg017.jpg015.jpg003.jpg043.jpg

I suggest you send OC Richard a pm explaining your situation. He is a piper based out of Southern California, and is quite knowledgeable about the gradual changing look of kilt accessories. He should be able to point you in the right direction.

Have a look for hallmarks on all the silver-coloured items (dirk, badges, brooches, sporran cantle etc.) If they are silver they may have both hallmarks and makers marks. These can be used to identify the date and will give a better idea of value.
Tartan and diced hose usually sell for between £80 and £115 when new (occasionally as low as £40) and for £15 to £40 when used.

As for the maker of the Sgian Dubh I believe it to be Robert Allison & James Allison, trading as Robert Allison & Son. Commenced trading 1954 Ceased trading 1982.

Yes, it is silver and marked for Edinburgh 1969. The maker's mark may well be R.A (rather than RA) which would make it Robert Allison and Son (1954 to the1982).

Thank you for your help, I have come to love the silver mounts, the information as to the who, where and, when is available. Made by the last of the old school smiths in Edinburgh Robert Allison and Son. The one thing that kind of threw me was it seems to have the older makers mark before the “and Son” days. However the date mark clearly put it into the later date. Hall marked Silver stainless steel blade with I think a Cairngorm Stone on the butt. The one that really has me scratching my head is the Dirk made by R.G. Lawrie in Glasgow and Edinburgh. Very ornate white metal mounts complete with companion fork and knife. I have spent months trying to date it and to come up with a figure as to what they may be worth. Scott
