    Fabric Fabric Everywhere...?

I own two beautiful kilts (Cameron of lochiel & A Cameron Dress red and black.) I am looking at getting fabric for my first belted plaid, but am unsure whom the best supplier /distributer of said fabric would be. I'm thinking the Cameron hunting tartan in weathered or muted. Any thoughts or comments are appreciated

    First...

    Hello, Frankey!

I suggest you take a look at the Cameron tartans available from D. C. Dalgliesh, House of Edgar, and Lochcarron. I did not see what you described at Strathmore, but you may want to take a look, just in case. Happy hunting!

First of all welcome Frankey from a fellow Cameron. May I suggest Cameron of Erracht weathered. Have a look at my profile album it makes a lovely kilt. Just as a note of caution, if you ever visit the clan homeland at Achnacarry don't wear your Cameron of Lochiel kilt you may find that it won't be as acceptable as the other clan tartans? just saying......

Take a look at costume designer and kiltmaker, Angus Harvey. http://www.angusharveykiltmaker.com/
He has a section on great kilts and the amount of yardage needed.

Thank you guys for your responses. I put the cart before the horse on this one.
Hello my fellow kilt wearers. My name is Joshua I live in South Carolina and this is my first post.
I thank everyone for there help.
Grizzly thanks for the Heads up I wasn't aware of the limited use of the Lochiel tartan until after I had the kilt made. I have to admit I feel like a rogue every time I wear it, I also confess most of me feels like not careing. Why limit the original Cameron tartan. O-well
    Highlander31; thanks for the link.
ASinclair; thanks for the info will look into them

    Hail, Frankey, from Columbia.

A belted plaid is a very cool thing, but the required yardage can be pretty expensive if you are dead set on a particular tartan... If I were you, I'd poke around for a few months and find something in one of the universal ones before committing to a big purchase. Some of the local fabric stores often have Black Watch or Royal Stewart in an acceptable weight, though it is not likely to be 100% wool. You might also look at Pendleton fabrics on eBay. Lay it out, buckle it on, and see what you think. Do you have some event or occasion in mind for wearing it? The good news is that you can always reuse the yardage if you decide a belted plaid is not for you. Be sure to check out older threads on ways to fold it, etc.

Ya I am willing to wait for the right pice of fabric. It's not for any specific event or gathering. I'm interested in the practical application ie. I wake up on a cold morning I rap a blanket around me, why not a kilt. And I am contemplating a bushcrafters rig doing some testing comfort / practicality in a woodland setting.
