The Eagle - Doesn't stick the landing ...

I finally watched the film The Eagle. For those of you who may not be familiar, it depicts the search for the golden eagle of the 9th Roman Legion who vanished in the present-day Scottish Highlands.

I can't say that I recommend it based on the content of the story; however, the costume design interested me. From my limited knowledge it didn't feel authentic to the time, but took some interesting liberties with mixing of the highland culture and roman culture.

Without spoiling anything, I'm referring to a heavy-chained sporran worn by a roman soldier who had been assimilated into a highland clan. It was a brief glimpse, but it looked more like armor than storage (even a chastity belt!). I was watching this on my AppleTV and wasn't able to get a screen shot, but I hope others may know what I'm speaking of. Reminded me of a SteamPunk Highlander even.

Anyone have suggestions of other unique liberties filmmakers, media, etc. have taken with highland wear (on purpose)?

I watched The Eagle recently, as well. While I wouldn't call it a very good movie, I found the cinematography was at times striking. I'm talking about the focus, atmosphere, composition of scenes, and such.

The opening shot of the film had me excited as the group coasted along the water.

The atmosphere felt like a horror film during certain instances which I thought was wonderful. It just didn't sustain or concentrate any elements strongly enough to cultivate any interest.

Also, were the 'sealmen' Pictish or is that a separate group in history? I just looked up a Wikipedia article that directed me to Selkies. They looked like many other depictions of the Pict tribes from pop culture.

I haven't seen the film but from the trailers I have seen I'd say there's nothing much historical about it in terms of costume, culture or plot.

As for liberties in other films, well, I think it might be quicker to list those which have not taken liberties!

No doubt Pictish, based on this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkTcJ...-Hg5cR6X7hA_R5

Its a "Ripping yarn" I'd say. Don't look for historic fact in any facet of it. Steam Punk is a good description of the dress some of the characters wore . I have seen it twice, by the way, just in case you thought I was being a bit dismissive of it.
