Horse Hair

A member told me it would take a pound of long horse hair to make a long hair sporran. I need to know right on the money how much horse hair it will take to make the sporran.

I'm not sure if there's a "right on the money" answer, but I was told but Scott (Artificer) who seems to be our resident sporran expert:

"A good rule (especially for your 1st sporran) would be 1lb for the body, and you'll probably want 1/2lb for the tassels - not that you'll actually USE that much in making the tassels, but you'll probably have a lot of wastage your
first time out.

18"-22" hair is all that is needed."

That's what I'd go with as it seems that horse hair is sold in 1lb or 1/2lb bundles.

I bought one pound of hair for the sporran it self and a half pound of another color for the tassels and I had a little left over but not much , you will want to have a little left over. make sure you get it longer then you need for trimming .
