    Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry Highlanders

    Hi All,

Im a former member of the above Regiment. Does anyone know who the official kilt-maker is for this regiment or whether their kilt is made with knife pleats or military box pleats?

    Thanks
    Sean

Strathmore Woolens. Tartan is MacDonnell of Glengarry H.S.L. Pre-1816 version. This tartan has 8 red lines per sett versus the traditional 10-line MacDonnell of Glengarry and is not in the tartan registry yet. Either 13-15 oz or the heavier weave would work for a kilt. Many of ours are now made of the lighter weave which still swings well. 8-9 yds, knife pleated to the white stripe, three straps. ORs are not fringed (traditionally correct), officers' are fringed (a recent change within the past 20 years or so).

If you send them an e-mail they will quote you prices; shipping is extra.

They will also sell the tartan to you if you know a local kilt maker.

if you have problems, PM me.

If you mean the National Register then it is included.

This is a photo taken from a small sett weave used for vests and ties. The backdrop appears to be a government tartan with a series of thick and thin red lines superimposed. The second, fourth, fifth and seventh lines are wider than the others.

    Similar, but. to the same.

I had some incorrect information in my initial post. From the weaver: "Tartan Registry: The setting of MacDonnell of Glengarry Tartan as worn historically by S.D. & G. Highlanders is the variant known as pre 1816 (H.S.L.) – Highland Society of London. The tartan is recorded correctly by the Scottish Tartans Authority IT1 Number 473 – www.tartansauthority.com. Unfortunately it has been incorrectly recorded by National Archives of Scotland in the National Register of Tartans and we have advised them to correct this entry as soon as possible. The actual tartan supplied to yourselves is woven specially in an expanded setting for military wear and was copied from a pattern provided by S.D. & G. Highlanders when we started making tartan and kilts for you."

    Dgb,

Thanks for the information, Ive been searching for a long time. Ill get in touch with Strathmore to see what their options are. The fact that they already know how to make the kilt per the regiment's standard is a big plus for me.

Is the SD&G variant a special weave? I havent found anything heavier than a 16oz for McDonnell of Glengarry and it sounds like our version is particular to the Regiment. Strathmore doesnt list the HSL version on their website, which isnt that surprising really.

    Thanks and Up the Glens!
    Sean
