    Gordon Tartan anyone?

I just got a call from Gordon Kirkbright of GK Textiles (formerly Fraser & Kirkbright Weaving)

He has 200 meters of double-width fabric in 65% polyester/35% Rayon woven by Marton Mills. This is the true P/V.

Gordon needs to re-coup his investment in this fabric and asked if I would post here for anyone who is interested.

Gordon is only asking $12.00cdn per meter, double-width. At today's exchange rate you could have enough fabric for a kilt for only $44.00usd + shipping.

The Sett size on this is 6" or 3" between yellow stripes.

This fabric has a tuck or kilt selvedge and is 12oz in weight.

If you would like some of this fabric please send me a PM or email. I will collect these and if there is enough interest I'll have Gordon ship over an entire bolt.

I'll pass the word around the Celtic Soceity in my area and see if there's an interest; we have a very strong connection to the Gordons. Our previous president which passed last year, Lu(cretia) Gordon, was on their board of directors; was daughter of Charles Gordon which was the first president of House of Gordon USA. Hopefully some will bite; that's a great price!

This is not a fabric woven by Fraser & Kirkbright or Ingles Buchan for GK Textiles. This was woven by Marton Mills for a customer of Gordon's. Gordon would not have this on his website.

Apparently the deal for the fabric fell through and Gordon is trying to re-coup his investment in 200 meters of fabric that he did not weave.

I have asked Gordon for a photo of the actual fabric. This is the Tartan though.

    Gordon Tartan, Modern version.

12oz P/V woven by Marton Mills with tuck selvedge.

This Tartan is Black Watch with a Gold overcheck repeating twice in each Sett. The total sett based on the Black Watch is 6" and the distance between the Gold lines is 3".

200 meters is three entire bolts of fabric. As you can imagine it would be fairly expensive to ship an entire bolt. And few individuals can afford an entire bolt. This is why Gordon contacted me. I could hold the bolt, or bolts, and cut and ship in whatever lengths required.

If you have ever wanted a kilt in the Gordon Modern Tartan you will probably never again see a deal like this. And entire kilts worth of very high quality fabric for less than $50.00.
This same amount of fabric, from the same mill, would normally retail at about $120.00.

If you would kindly read my posts I clearly state twice that the Sett is 6". The Gordon Tartan is based on the Black Watch with a Gold stripe appearing twice in each set. The Gold stripes are what are 3" apart.

It's the 'golden' or yellow stripes that I am referring to.

I used to wear the Gordon tartan and 3" between the yellow stripes appears on the small side. I seem to recall my old army kilt being almost double that.

Is the setting of the army kilts much bigger than what is normally made by the tartan mills for the civilian market?

It is not a military vs civilian thing at all. Sett size is dependent on many factors. The thread count is what determines what Tartan it is.

Heavier fabric usually results in a larger Sett. Not always but usually.
Sometimes a fabric is made heaver by using thicker yarns and sometimes made heavier by packing more yarns into each inch. One will result in a larger Sett and the other maybe not.

Merino wool will usually result in a smaller size Sett due to the individual fibers being finer.

A customer may also specify the Sett size that would be adequate for the intended use. A tie needs a smaller Sett than a kilt.

This fabric is made from Marton Mills Poly/Rayon blend and is 11-12oz per linear yard, double-width. So lighter in weight than 16oz fabric. The normal P/V Sett size for the Gordon Tartan is 6 1/4" so this is indeed very slightly smaller.

But this is the full and actual Gordon thread count.

...tempting my addiction ...( do I really need, or want to add more kilt fabric, to my pile?) ... ( but it would be so cheap!) .. ( get thee behind me satan ).

I would buy it because Gordon is one of my favorite tartans but I have no connection to it.
