What a great and informative site! My immediate family is from Canada (via Ireland) and this will be a treasure for my Dad. Thanks for the link!

If i'm not mistaken, the kilts themselves aren't khaki its a kilt cover worn in the field. There's two kinds, one that ties in back and covers just the front of the kilt and another, worn in the Great War and the begining of the Second, that wraps around completely. Both have a lrge pocket on the front.
The front-apron-only kind show up on eBay from time to time and What Price Glory sells a repro of the wrap-around type.

    khaki tartan

    try www.canadiansoldiers.com.

What you are describing is khaki kilt apron. Scottish regiments wore these in the Second Boer War (1898-1902) and the First World War to "mute" their tartans in combat.

What I am referring to is indeed, a khaki tartan -- the 73rd Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force in 1915 wore them -- a colour print of one can be found in the Osprey Men-At-Arms book "The Canadian Army at War" by Mike Chappell (plate "C").

It turns out that several Canadian Highland units wore these kilts, along with the matching "khaki" glengarry at the beginning of the war.

I wish I had a scanner so I could scan the plate in for everyone to see -- it is a most interesting tartan, to be sure.

    Cheers!

Todd, I digress slightly. Websites like canadiansoldiers.com serve to remind me that until recently, Canada has had a stong and proud military, but the last quarter century has seen it essentially dismalted into little more than another police force. Canada has been "soft highjacked" by socialist politicians with little interest in defence spending beyong the skeletal essentials. Sadly, it would seem this is not likley to be corrected anytime soon. When I see old photos and memorabilia, I can't help but feel that we've seriously let down the men that have and are trying to serve their country. This must change if we are to survive in a modern and very dangerous world.
    Sorry for the rant.

blu, the reduction of the Canadian military came about through defense treaties with the US that put responsibility for Canadas defense mostly on the US. I have no idea why those treaties came about as they did.

    Canadian Army...

Not to get too off-topic here, but the Canadians did a fantastic job in Afganistan, Blu -- I still remember seeing the coverage on the news showing the Princess Patricia's coming down off the ramp of a C-141 with pipers leading them, what a stirring imagine!

I have no problem with the quality of Canadian troops. Frankly, in some respects they're better than ours and they're very professional in conduct. I think that has to do with them being a smaler force and being more selective. Not neccesarily a bad thing.

Ya, reductions like cutting the Avro Arrow project. If it hadn't been cancelled, it would have still been a decent interceptor, even with today's F-22s and Grippens.

Here's a website if anyone would like some more info:
    http://www.avroarrow.org/AvroArrow/index.html
