Sprran hangers issue
I prefer sporran hangers to sporran belts, although I wear both. When wearing a wide kilt belt there's no problem using the hangers. However, when I wear a waist coat etc., when wearing a kilt belt really isn't quite right, I revert to the sporran strap.
Like many here, I'm a bit paunchy, although not as profoundly round as many. Nevertheless, a sporran strap only pulls in the front of the kilt emphasizing my less than ideal shape.
What can I do? Is there someway to get the "slimming" effect of sporran hangers when not wearing a kilt belt or should I jut go ahead an wear a kilt belt under my waist coats and sweaters?
I know one answer: lose weight, and I'm doing that but at my age, It's a battle with nature. The loses are coming more and more slowly.

I fight the same problem. The Sporran strap tends to emphasize the rounded belly so I wore hangers like you have unless I was not wearing a belt. I have since gone back to a strap even with a belt. I just tighten up the strap so the Sporran sits higher just below the belt. This arrangement may be uncomfortable to some as the strap may feel too tight. I have managed to find a compromise in strap tightness that works for me.

For those times when you need a little extra support for your sporran strap may I suggest that you sew two loops into the inside of the outer apron spaced about 12" apart.
When you don't wear a belt you can flip these loops out and run the sporran strap through them.
Benning Boy, you saw my kilts with the beltloops at the apron edges. This would give you a very similar way to keep the sporran strap above your belly.
You can make these loops just like the small hanging loops you find on some kilts. I would only suggest that you use something a little more robust like paracord.
When not in use, these loops flip back inside the kilt and would be invisible. When in use, they would mostly be covered by the vest.
Alternately, and only if you have some matching fabric, you could add two beltloops to the front apron. However these would show anytime you are not wearing a jacket.

As a slightly simpler alternative:
1. Run the sporran strap / sporran chain around your waist and let it hang in front, underlining your belly.
2. Grab the sporran chain / strap at your sides and lift it up and let it rest on the TOP of the 2 waist buckles (one on the left and one on the right).
3. Allow the chain / strap to 'hang' from that point to the front of the kilt.
4. Adjust the tightness to let it hang lower or higher.

I picked up a couple of holster clips, pictured below, and stitched some black leather belt loops to them. Although I like the solutions posed by both Steve and Rocky.

Rubbish, you are using age as an excuse. I was 58 when I decided to loose weight before buying my first kilt. I lost 6 stone (45 kilos) in 10 months. If I can do it, anyone can. Determination and willpower, once you've been dieting a couple of weeks you get used to it and as you loose weight you can increase the amount of exercise you can do. If you want to know what I did to loose the weight I'd be happy to tell you.
