    Kilt Strap Question

This is possibly a bit of a daft question to be asking and I realise it may've been asked in the past, but I'd like to ask a bit of advice regarding kilt straps. I'm new to kilt wearing and two of my kilts are a bit too large for me - even on the tightest hole the kilt is still too loose and I daren't go out without a belt on as I fear the kilt would fall down
With my newest kilt which has three straps (something of a bad idea I understand) fits a bit better but I'm not sure how tight the straps should be. Should they just do up for show or rather be tight as possible to stop the kilt falling down or should they be somewhere in the middle.
I realise that this is a bit of a daft question but I'd appreciate some proper advice as I want my more suitably sized kilt to fit and look better.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions / help.

The top two straps i.e. the one on the left and the top one on the right should be tight enough to hold the kilt up (snug but not digging in). The bottom right strap is there to help the front apron lay a bit better.

Moving the buckles will tighten your kilts up nicely. You only need to move the waist-level buckles, as KC points out the third one is "vestigal" and many prefer to remove it or order their kilt without.

BarbT has a great thread here on moving buckles, I'll try to come back with a link to it. Easy hand sewing job.

Daithi, there are some here that prefer three straps and some that prefer two but, consider those differences as preferences/opinions, certainly, not 'gospel'! I don't think that three straps on a kilt is a bad idea and I agree with Ian (kiltedchef) as to how the three straps work.

Mine has three and they work as offered in the thread. Took me a few wears to find the right tightness of the top two (for fit and comfort) and the bottom right so the front looked just right. But, now that I've got it; comfortable, stays up, and looks good.

Thanks everyone for the advice and tips. After a bit of trial, error and adjustment I've now found a comfortable fit for my new kilt
I haven't yet plucked up the courage to think about moving the straps on my other larger kilts and think that I may have to consult a friendly sewing expert that I know for some advice on how to do the first before tackling the job on my own.
