Solid Color or Tartan Tie?

I have a question for the Rabble! I am going to be attending a Burn's Night Dinner shortly and I will be wearing my Argyll Jacket. I am not going to the event in formal wear, but I want some input.

I own a Campbell tartan kilt and I wanted to hear some opinions about the type of tie I should wear. I own a Campbell tartan tie, but I do kind of like the looks of a solid tie.

My suggestion: Solid wool tie, shelby knot, try and match your flashes. Matching the kilt can be good but a bit of contrast in a complimentary colour often looks even better. I recommend a nice white shirt with a good stiff collar too.

I am with Kiltfitz, you can't beat a solid tie with matching flashes. For other occasions, you might even consider a regimental stripe.

At least amongst Scottish pipers, patterned neckties are more common than selfcoloured (solid). These are sometimes striped, sometimes with an all-over logo, or a combination of the two. They usually display a college, regiment, or other organisation to which the wearer belongs or formerly belonged.

40 years of seeing smartly dressed Scots wear such ties has made them look "right" to me.

I myself have a Royal Scottish Country Dance Society tie, due to my being a member for several years. I also have a tie having West Virginia state seal all-over pattern, due to my being from that state. The tie I'm wearing in my avatar belonged to my dearly loved late father-in-law.

In my opinion ties 'coming from the heart' in the British manner look better than the reversed ones more common here in the USA.

Speaking only for myself, I do not wear tartan ties with my tartan kilts. I typically wear a striped or 'club' style tie with my tartan kilts and sometimes a solid color tie. However, I do occasionally wear a tartan tie with my non tartan kilts ('utility style' and yes, I do wear them with ties and waist coats or "V" neck sweaters) and I always wear a tartan tie with a suit or sport coat. My tartan ties represent the three clans most closely associated with my Scottish heritage, Fraser, Skene and Burnett.

Though not part of your question, I might add that I do not wear tartan flashes with either tartan or non tartan kilts.
