FIRES tartan
Quite by accident this evening I discovered something called Costello's Own, a small group of pipers associated with the 77th Army Band at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.
Read about them here:
http://www.army.mil/article/58310/
Google Costello's Own bagpipers to see pics and video.
But to the point: can anyone tell me about the tartan they wear? If you scroll down here http://alexismalcolmkilts.com/1532.html you'll see a photo naming the tartans as FIRES. However when I search STA or SRT I can't find the tartan listed. I'd like to know the story behind it.
Fort Sill Used to be home of the artillery school, but to make it sound more highfalutin today it's called the Fires Center of Excellence, it still trains gun bunnies, but it sounds better, I guess.
If you're ever in southwestern Oklahoma, there are interesting things to see at Sill, and the adjoining Wichita Mountains Wildlife Area. Check out the town of Medicine Park, and get a Meersburger at Meers, you haven't lived until you've had one.

This was discussed a couple of years ago in this thread. It has not been registered with the STR but I have recently added it into the STA's Db.

I would assume that red hose would be a requirement with this tartan.

No, I think fire hose would be more appropriate.

The reason it is listed as "FIRES" is because it covers both ADA and FA, which both cover everything from guns to various types of fire support from rotary and fixed wing air support, mortars, naval CFF, etc. I used to be an FDO and I received a few CFF from 11 series and, thank God you guys have access to 13F, although (this year) they've been pulled out of maneuver and back to the battery. So "fires" isn't just about gun bunnies, it's about guys who know how to make stuff blow up from far away so you don't have to run straight at it and get all shot up.
You can find the 77th Army Band website, which discusses the meaning of the colors in the tartan.
13F and JFOs, etc. are also trained at Ft. Sill, which covers

The plus side would be water proofing. Thanks for the pun.

Ha! I always enjoy a good pun!
If you are interested in getting a kilt made in that tartan, I bet you could contact the band and arrange for something pretty easily.

OH! YUCK! I wouldn't be caught dead in an arty tartan. I'm hardcore Infantry all the way. However, I'm cool with the artillery. Infantry is the Queen of Battle, but artillery is the King, and the Queen is always happy when he King puts his balls right where they're wanted.
