Kilted at Promotion Party (Wetting Down)
I was promoted to Captain in the U.S. Navy yesterday. Following the promotion was the traditional "Wetting Down" for which I, my son, and several friends from church were kilted. The "Wetting Down" historically refers to wetting down the new gold stripe added to an officer's uniform with salt water so as to match the other stripes. Now it is a tradition where the newly promoted officer buys drinks (and food) for his or her shipmates, friends, and family.
