The word Argyle when used for the patterned socks does not mean one pattern. There are many Argyle patterns.
Argyle simply means a pattern of two, three or more colored diamonds sometimes with additional intersecting lines.
May I ask? Are you a hand knitter or a machine knitter"
Do you know how to do intarsia?
This is just one of hundreds of patterns that can be found on the net.

The pattern that Steve provided is like most of the others I've seen -- it makes no provision for calf shaping, other than suggesting you go up one needle size. That might work if you're a lean fellow, but if you need real calf shaping it gets very complicated very quickly.
IIRC the Gainford book (available from Amazon) has a pattern that Lady G offers up but says she herself never tried/completed.

There is also a thread running (slowly) over at Ravelry discussing the concept.

I'm on the iPad so linking is a challenge

Search for Highland dance socks (hose) patterns. Those are usually argyle and there are folks that have knit them by hand...

Unless things have changed quite recently, the dance forums have the same questions and results. There is an old printed pattern, scanned and posted, nearly illegible. Or there is a pattern sold only with the kit of yarn to complete it - and again, these are quite often for young girls/women who do not require significant calf increases (gross generalization, but that's what I have encountered in searching for an argyle pattern in past).

Ya know what we kilt wearers need is someone with a circular sock knitting machine or a computer controlled double flat bed knitting machine.
Oh, wait, I happen to have both of those.
Now I just need to learn how to do argyles.

The ravelry group is pretty much writing the pattern as we go. Keep checking in. You might want to get a good sock knitting book like Sock Knitting Master Class. It does not have argyle in it, however, it does have every toe and heel pattern known to man with toe up and top construction details. That will get you through the foot knitting section. The links already posted will get you through the argyle section.
Gainsfords book has all the cuff patterns that you will see here, the sock patterns are out of date and the argyle pattern is for a sock, not the hose. Otherwise, surf the hose patterns on Ravelry, most are free and all are tested.
