    Pinstripes?

Saw a nice charcoal gray vest at a thrift store, and it was pinstriped. What do you gents think, would it clash? Anybody here ever wear one?

With my three piece pinstripe suit certainly. With the kilt? Gosh, never thought about it! No, on quick reflection, I don't think that would work for me.

If you are wearing a solid color kilt ... a pinstripe vest might work out if done with a little creative forethought .

However , if you are wearing a tartan kilt in either a traditional , contemporary or casual fashion .... a pinstripe vest may look a little awkward .

Of course there may be examples that prove me wrong .

    Just my humble opinion .

Is this the vest in question? I wear this (without a jacket) in combination royal blue shirt, solid red tie, lovet blue hose and my Confederate Memorial tartan. The stripes are so subtle and the tartan/tie red so fetching it seems to work out. I don't think I could pull off this vest with any other kilt unless it were a solid and specifically made for me cloth or pattern.

I'm with Jock, I don't know that I've ever seen pinstriped suiting fabric worn in the context of traditional Highland Dress.

For sure there are so-called "contemporary" kilt suits made in Scotland which are entirely pinstriped (jacket, vest, kilt). I don't care for that look, personally, mainly because I prefer the look of kilts which are either tartan, or selfcoloured/solid colored, and I like a contrast between the kilt and jacket (it all gets too matchy for me, the all-black kilt suit or what have you).

Here's our Hamish wearing a full pinstriped kilt suit

I don't know that I've ever seen anyone wear a pinstripe vest with a tartan kilt, although Xmarker English Bloke (pic below) has been known to look good in a converted pinstripe jacket with a tartan kilt. A pinstripe vest could work, but I'd like to see some pics before deciding.

Pinstripes vests and/or jackets are more common with a pinstripe kilt, as in the photo of Hamish posted above. That type of kilt-suit is a more modern look, if that's what you're into. Personally, I think it looks better with a sporran than without... more kilt-like.

Here's a couple more of Hamish:

The vest in question is a lot darker gray than yours, Tarheel. The stripes are more subtle, but I still think it would clash with my tartan. Lots of interesting photos, for sure.

I picked my vest and jacket because of the stripes being so fine and subtle. I like the lighter shade also. It works for me with the limitations I've set. I've yet to alter the cut for my kilt but will in the end.

I have a pinstripe Utilikilt Mocker in light grey with white stripe that would match Tarheel's vest. I can't make anything but solids look good with it. My black and near black pinstripe one is easier to dress with. But then a plaid shirt would dominate the look. With both I end up going high contrast solids rather than low or matching on the rest of the kit.

Pants is only a present tense verb here. I once panted, but it's all cool now.

Wear your kilt to the thrift shop and try it on
I tried a pinstripe over my MacDonald ancient while out vest shopping. Didn't like it, but the material had too much 'shine' also.
