Have a great time at the opera. Jennifer and I have attended "Book of Mormon" in Kansas City and "AIDA" in St Louis. Both times I was in my kilt, charcoal grey tweed jacket and waistcoat, tie, etc. Both times we, as a couple, got quite a few good looks and compliments on our dress. You will stand out in a good way. I was surprised to see how dressed down people were in both venues we attended, Kansas City feeling almost like I was at a basket ball game not a musical. Enjoy the evening and show off your wife and kilt attire with pride.

In early April The Woman and I attended a concert at Symphony Center in Chicago. There were quite a few folks dressed well, but not much better than business casual, and most of these folks sat on the main floor near the stage. Then, there were quite a few dressed for a basketball game. I think most of these sat way up in the balconies. In a way folks dressed according to the price of their ticket.
I wore an 8-yard kilt with charcoal jacket from Freedom Kilt, and a red vest. I got lots of compliments, some of them very, very flattering. And I noticed many people in the audience at intermission checking me out. I think they approved of the kilt, but I was easy to spot standing quite near the stage. The man in front of me, a world famous music professor, was wearing a German trachtenjanker. We made up the ethnic dress section.
So, go to the opera kilted and don't be surprised if you aren't among the best dressed, if not the best dressed, in the house. And, be prepared to be acknowledge. Let us know how it goes.
Near the end of La Boheme the bass sings Vecchia Zimmara. It's my favorite from the opera because I can sing it. Try to get an English translation of it. It's kind of an interesting piece, I think, about sacrificing dearly for a friend.

My wife and I attend about 5-6 operas a year and I now always go kilted. The 3 we attend annually in Austin have black tie dinners before, so for those it is pc time. In Dallas we have attended a couple and I was the only one kilted each time. We have done about 5 in Ft. Worth and I have never seen any other kilts. A few weeks ago at the opera in San Antonio there was one other kilted man and, of course, we spoke.
One advantage of being kilted is that total strangers will come up to you asking about the tartan and the kilt. For both of us, it makes the evening more enjoyable. My repeated kilt wearing at the opera in Austin has, since I started 5+ years ago, has now spread to include 3-5 other men.
Let us know how it goes.

I think the mariachi jacket would go quite well with a kilt in the MacMendoza tartan.

A picture of that would make my year! The hat too?
