Good to know! This may sound crazy, but I owe Roddy Piper with getting me interested in my Scottish ancestry.
As a young kid growing up in Indiana in the early 80s, I was a huge fan of professional wrestling back in its heyday. I really didn't have any type of a "normal" family at home, and was a latchkey kid who lived for books and shows on PBS...and WWF when it was on. All my father knew was that his grandmother (née Lewis) came from "Sky Island" in Scotland. So thanks to some kind librarians at the public library and the Encyclopedia Britannica, I was able to start doing my own research as a young 5th Grader.
Enter Rowdy Roddy Piper....a larger than life figure, a piper and kilt wearer from the land my ancestors hailed from. Of course over the last 30 years I've learned a lot more, but it all started with some guy in a red kilt body-slamming Hulk Hogan!
U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Air Force, Firefighter, Government Contractor, Descendant of Clan MacLeod. Oh, and I just started learning the pipes, so I can add "aspiring bagpiper" to the list.
