Christmas Kilt look
So my family has been invited to visit the in laws for Xmas dinner, its an informal dress code and I thought a great opportunity to wear my kilt informally. So how does this look? Ghillie shirt, kilt, belt & sporran. Even my youngest wanted to get in on the look and put on her tartan skirt.

Looks great!
What tartan is that? It's interesting and lovely.
Funny about Christmastime, it's when you see tartan everywhere, on ribbons and wrappings and people's clothes. Usually it's Royal Stewart.
The other night I piped for the annual Los Angeles Holiday Brass concert, and I wore my Drummond Of Perth kilt, it having that red & green Christmas-y look.

Cheers Richard, the kilt was hand made by these chaps macdonaldkiltmakers.co.uk and apparently required 6000+ hand stitches and 8 yards of cloth! The actual tartan is Dunans Rising.....its a tartan based upon my nearest kith & kin from Greenock, Scotland.

Well, since you asked... Here's how I see things. If I wouldn't wear it with a pair of jeans, I wouldn't wear it with a kilt. Personally, unless I'm putting together a costume of some sort, I don't wear Ghillie shirts. A nice Van Heusen dress shirt would serve you better, I think, unless the diner is some manner of historical event. The kilt, on the other hand, is spectacular.

I think what you are wearing is fine. Some here would suggest that the ghillie shirt is a bit theatrical. You may want to suggest that your daughter swivel her kilt to hand the buckles on the side rather than the front.
Cheers....

Tenor Clef, is that a sackbut in your badge there?
I do love listening to Renaissance sackbut-and-shawm consorts, especially live at our local Ren Faire.

I think the ghillie looks sharp, and would have no problem wearing it in an informal setting (especially in light of some things I've seen folks wear to semi-formal affairs). Light and loose. Probably wouldn't wear it to a business meeting, but fine for a gathering of family and friends. And again, love the colors in that kilt; big fan of purples with greens and blues, and that one blends them extremely well.
How was your experience with R&I MacDonald Kiltmakers? I read them recommended from another source, but that was several years old.

Indeed it is Richard! I got a grant/registration or whatever its called earlier this year from South Africa. A sackbut in chief and a thistle proper in base. I believe it was actually a member of this very forum who introduced me to the Bureau of Heraldry which is a Government dept in South Africa which issues Letters Patent both to nationals and foreigners alike.
As for Renaissance music have you come across the Serpent? Very similar sound to the ancient sackbut- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NWez9hhitXQ
