Abergeldie Castle - Gordon of Abergeldie tartan
Just a couple of links to connect a rather rare tartan
https://www.tartanregister.gov.uk/ta....aspx?ref=1462
with recent floods in the Northeast of Scotland.

Beautiful but horribly sad photos. Thanks for sharing.

The Abergeldie tartan is an interesting one in that it's another pattern taken from a rather poor quality representation that gives a general impression of the tartan. The colours and proportions are by no means clear and this is therefore but one possible interpretation.

Peter,
Is the portrait of Rachael Gordon still extant? Is it possible to provide a reference or a web link to it?

Alan, I've never seen it but found a 2004 picture of it in the Great Hall at Abergeldie Castle where I'm assuming it is still (current weather permitting ).
I have also seen a cleaned up graphic in which the tartan is much clear but I don't know the source nor whether it has been doctored to improve it. I would love to see the original but, assuming that it is still at Abergeldie, now is not the best time to ask.

That's frightening!
It's all too common here in California, in fact just now we're getting hit with a deluge and a number of homes will be damaged or lost today, I'm sure. Of course we don't have anything ancient or of historic significance here, but it's somebody's home nevertheless.
Here people always want to build on the tops of cliffs and hills to get a nice view, but then October brush-fires burn away the vegetation which was holding all the dirt in place so that the February rains wash the hills and houses away.
This is chilling to watch and listen to. It happens every year.

The portrait does still hang over the fireplace in the great hall at Abergeldie. Here is a link to a photo of it http://houseofgordonusa.org/images/r...abergeldie.jpg
