    This is just ridiculous

I did intend to take a kilt with me when I go to visit my mother, who now lives in central England, but if this is what is happening now I may have to rethink.

I think anyone of any description, would have been a target, they were just looking for trouble

An isolated incident I would say.
I was once punched by a young thug in the south of England who took a dislike to my Scottish accent but I was not wearing a kilt at the time, but I am across the border into northern England frequently and in my experience the vast majority of English people are kilt friendly and see the Scots as allies rather than enemies.

I live in the West Midlands of England, and have never suffered any problem of this sort. I agree with the comment that it was probably a group of people looking for trouble. People of that sort are probably most active late evening - the report says this happened around 11.30 p.m. Certainly appalling and inexcusable at any time, but I do try not to look conspicuous when I'm out and about at that hour.

Sounds like an anti-Scottish incident perpetrated by the same sort of idiots who go after Poles and anyone else they perceive as foreign. This sort of thing seems to be on the increase in England, unfortunately. The kilt just helped them to identify him as a Scot. Ironically, they would probably also target a fellow Englishman who was wearing a kilt, taking him for a Scot, I imagine.

I think that if you read the entire article you will find this - "He said the assault came after a row in a pub,"

So this was not just some guy walking down the street. This had started previously. Drinks were probably involved and who knows what else.

I trust this was an isolated incident. I live 17 miles away, but have never had this sort of problem. I think the moral is don't get into arguments with strangers in pubs late at night or any other time, kilted or otherwise.
If you are going to do it, do it in a kilt!

As a school boy in Inverness my English accent was at times enough to get attacked mostly verbally, rarely physically though it did happen.
If I were to wear a kilt in Scotland at night it wouldn't be down the pub at night, but I would going to a restaurant and returning back to base by car or taxi.

Similarly in England I wear the kilt down to my sailing club or out to restaurants any time of day or night, but I wouldn't wear one out, down Prince of Wales road in Norwich at night any day of the week ( it's the pub , and night club street of Norwich full of drunks). They even have an SOS bus there,
