The Sundial Bridge - Redding, CA

Sherri and I spent a couple of days in Redding, California to visit the beautiful Sundial Bridge.

It's a pretty amazing piece of architecture. The bridge has no right-angles. It has no parallel lines (except along the deck itself). The entire weight of the bridge (and up to 3 million pounds of force) rests on a single 12-inch-wide bearing at the base of the 217 feet high pylon.

Behind the pylon is an arc of tile-covered cement with brass markers showing the time as the shadow of the pylon passes them through the day. I found the sundial to be accurate within 10 minutes.

There is also a museum, gift shop, and small restaurant with coffee drinks, sandwiches, beer and wine. Most of the seating is outdoors. After sunset, the restaurant had a live band playing some decent dance music. So, we got a bit of dancing in to top off the trip.

I've added some pictures of me at the bridge to my gallery. If you want to see more pics of our visit, try this link: http://www.mindstation.com/sundialbridge/

What an incredible bridge, very nice piccies, well I can't beat that one but here is a bridge in Northern Tasmania called the Batman Bridge, no, not named after THAT Batman, but an early pioneer if Tasmania.

Sorry, it was taken before my kilting days.

    Bill,

That is one awesome set of pictures, well done and thank you for sharing.

    Graham,

I almost hate to say this, but you still look great even without being kilted, but then I noticed you were with your better half

Both those bridges are great engineering marvels, glad everyone here could see them

    Graham,

Beautiful bridge. If we ever make it to Tasmania, we'll have to pay it a visit.

BTW, you definitely look better kilted!

    Thanks for sharing Bill.
I love bridges That would be high on my must see list If I came "Over there". We've got some pretty famous ones here in scandnavia too. From Sweden to Denmark. That is supposed to be the worlds largest (Although the Japanese are doing something about it) The bridge goes from Malmo in Sweden to Copenhagen in Denmark.

I can Now get in my car and drive from my home to nearly anywhere in Europe without having to take a ferry.I'll post a link.

    All the best.....David.

Graham BK he still looks happy.

OK OK you win David, your bridge is bigger than mine, but not to be outdone, here is Australia's OLDEST bridge, built by convicts in 1823-25.

Great shots Rigged. thanks for sharing- that is the most unique bridge I have ever heard of. Except the one those Polish guys were fishing off of in the Nevada desert.
