    Outlander kilt question

    Hello,
Does anyone know or have an idea of the length and weight of the great kilt worn by Sam Heughan (Jamie Fraser) in the Outlander tv show? I'm looking to get something with similar weight and flow/swoosh as that, probably in the Black Watch Weathered tartan. Please and thank you

    -Derek

You'll want to read this thread: http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/f...anguage-85690/

Terry Dresbach, the costume designer for the show, had a lot to say in the discussion. I haven't re-read the entire thread to see if your question was answered specifically, but I seem to recall (this was several years ago) that the fabric details did come up.

Terry Dresbach who is the costume designer for the Outlander TV series joined our forum and posted on the making of the costumes for the show.

The Tartans used were designed specifically for the show. It is my understanding that they are all plain weave and not the Twill weave we associate with kilt fabrics.

It has been stated that the clothing items for the show were not supposed to represent actual items and artistic license was taken in the interest of looking good on camera.

I have heard that some of the items worn by Sam had undergarments to enhance the appearance of volume. Think short pettycoats.

The Outlander fabrics woven and available today are, I believe, the equivalent of light weight 12oz.

    Outlander tartan source

I know you're not planning to use one of the tartans from the Outlander series, but in case others reading the thread are interested, the tartans are available here:

Didn't have the exact info I was looking for, but it was a very interesting thread. Thanks for the link.

Thanks for the info Steve! 13 oz is midweight right?

I LOVE the Outlander tartan! I really want a kilt in it, but it is way over price in my opinion.

Actually my mistake. The fabric offered in the Outlander Tartans is 12oz hopsack plain weave. It does not have a kilt selvedge.

There are 5 registered Tartans for the TV show.

    https://www.tartanregister.gov.uk/qR...ring=Outlander

These are restricted to be woven only by Anthony Haines Textiles.

Ahh, that explains why it's so expensive. Only comes from one place.

Anyone know where I can get mid or heavyweight weathered tartans for less than $50 per yard/meter? So far I haven't found any good weathered tartans in mid or heavyweight any lower then $60-$70.
