I'd like to hear from you....about tartan
A long time ago it was said by many lairds--Clan chieftains--and historians that tartan is like any other endeavor. Approach it with knowledge, respect, and make it work. All will be well, then. Apparently, some here disagree.
X Marks the Scot, in Steve's words, has no 'kilt police' and outside Scotland there is no such thing as 'tartan police'. They don't exist as such within Scotland, do they? Therefore, in a place like America, it's recommended against but I have seen many wear a kilt in one tartan and fly plaid in another tartan. If the person loves that, who's to put a stop to it?
I love seeing the advice given on this site, but when you old-timers start laying down the law, it's just disappointing. In America especially, people are enjoying tartan and we should rejoice. If a Scot were offended, I'm sure he/she would speak up, but even the chieftains are generally happy when an outsider asks to wear their tartan.
I think a lightening up and a celebration of the love of tartan is better than telling people what they can't do!

You should have another brownie, they seem to help you find that inner peace.
Lord knows, we need 'kilt police police' about as bad as we need 'kilt police' themselves. Especially if the kilt police police in question confuse fact with conjecture, or disagreement with demands.

In my opinion .....well said, and plainly spoken

Yeah, for real, I'd seriously recommend that you notch it down a bit while you get to know folks. Coming on like a ton of bricks is rarely a good way to make a first impression anywhere, and it's especially true on teh interwebs.

Your brownie allusion escapes me, but I agree with the rest. Do you actually agree with yourself? Or do you really mean to say one reprehensible thing is fine, but it's terrible to dispute that reprehensible thing!

Thank you, yes, henceforth I'll just post nothing then.

Thank you kindly. It's only the 3rd decent reply I've had on this site and I appreciate it.

Sir, what exactly is so horrible in that post that I must dial it down? Please tell me. Those are my facts along with my feelings...you object?

I never said anything was horrible and I never said you shouldn't post. I get that you're enthusiastic about tartan and kilts. Everyone here is. But, you're definitely coming on awfully strong and I suspect ruffling a few feathers. When you're new somewhere, in meatspace or online, it's generally a good idea to play it cool while you get the lay of the land. I suspect you'll find plenty of members on your side of the aisle, just chill a bit while we all get to know each other.

It's not what you're saying, it's how your saying it. You come across like a brash 8 year old who's had too many E numbers, is overly aggressive/defensive and opinionated. As for running to Steve and reporting you, this isn't a playground, in general we sort out our minor disagreements.
The old timers either age or forum related have done and seen a lot more than you have and therefore have mellowed with age and experience - I have seen some "not to my taste" outfits presented here, but I keep my proverbial mouth shut or offer some minor adjustment advice, try it.
By nature I am a very aggressive opinionated git, due to being a southern Scot with 22 years military service under his belt, but even I have been reasonable and measured in my replies on here. A little consideration and manners costs nothing but could win you some friends, the other option is to go find a forum where you will be appreciated, it really is up to you.
