Yet Another Kilted @ WalMart Story
Went to WalMart, in Kanata, on sunday.
I did not receive one comment; however, the only person that did not look at me, with the deer in the headlight look, was the guy with the white cane and sunglasses.

Going to the big discount stores and malls is fun. I really get a laugh out of folks trying to pretend they don't see anything unusual. The real fun is when the young ladies are talking to you. It drives the young bucks crazy.

You know, I'm beginning to notice a trend in people's reactions based on where you are. It seems that local places with their regular customers will generate more comments and less fear of saying something to that guy in the kilt. In big-name franchises, tourist attractions, and airports, it seems that there's so many out-of-towners that perhaps they would feel out of place mentioning anything about a kilt. The more audible reactions about my own kilt come from downtown, where most of the locals hang out (especially at the bars). I hardly ever get comments at Wal-Mart or Burger King (except from a few kids, whose parents quickly try to silence them). Does anyone else notice a trend like this?

Now that you mention it, I do see that pattern. When there are lots of out of towners around there are fewer comments. Of course, now that the locals have gotten used to seeing me kilted the comments are far fewer.

You might be right on that. I've worn my kilt in many different stores and in many municipalities large and small. The difference I notice is that the comments are usually friendlier and up close in smaller towns. It's in the medium and large centers where I notice the shouts from cars etc.

I love the "rubberneck" response from people who drive past. I was out front doing the garden when that happened and the guy actually drove round the block a few times, probably to make sure he wasnt imagining things. A short while later he came past again with the his missus inthere as well Cheeres Andrew
