New Kilt - Wool UT Kilt in Macmillan Black

I decided to try out one of UT Kilt's special order wool kilts. I decided to get one made in Macmillan Black tartan. In my initial genealogical research, I thought I may have had a Macmillan connection, but I couldn't confirm that in my later research. However, as Macmillan Black is not an accepted tartan by their clan chief, I think it could safely be considered a fashion tartan.

Anyway, back to the kilt--which I just received Saturday. As many probably know about UT Kilts, they specialize in low-cost kilts, both traditional and utility, and accessories. They have great customer service and fast shipping. I'd recommend them for someone who needs affordable, entry-level options; of course, you get what you pay for. The kilt presents well and should be good for occasional use. As for the build quality, it's a $99 kilt. The leather straps and hardware are of adequate quality and there is a nylon liner (although there does not appear to be internal construction that would require a liner to be present).

I would easily say that my USAK Casual Kilt has superior construction to the wool UT Kilts. However, the USAK Casual in my size cost more than the UT Kilt did. Again, you get what you pay for. Nonetheless, I am very pleased with my purchase and I will definitely enjoy it for what it is.

I'll try to get some pics of it later. If you want to see it, you can search YouTube for "Macmillan Kilt"; one of the first results is from user Life in a Kilt, who ordered the same kilt from UTK.

I just bought a wool from UT. It was in clearance and I got it for $79. It's scottish national, 25" length, which is something I need as I am tall. 24" sort of works, but 25" is better. The only other kilts I have are a UT standard utility in black watch and a heritage of scotland 5 yard in heritage of scotland. My reasoning is that I am losing weight, lots and I don't want to spend the bank yet. When I get down to my goal weight, I plan to get a made for me by USA Kilts or one of the fine makers on this forum, definitely in Buchanan and maybe one in Anderson. Other than that, I'll get a Utilikilt Workman for doing work around the house. Comparing the Heritage 5 yard to the UT 8 yard, I'd have to say the UT is a little better quality, heavier, maybe softer and the color is more subdued. My only complaint is that the straps are a little short. The heritage has longer although no as thick straps.
American by birth, human by coincidence and earthling by mistake.

I bought a clearance item wool MacMillan Black from UT Kilts for a great price. It was supposed to be a 36, says so on the tag, but it is at least a 38. I cinch the straps all the up. But no problem, it fits. Maybe that's why it was returned. It is an inch longer than my size, but again no problem, I just wear it a tad higher. Like other untailored kilts I have, the fit is full (more fabric) and open.

There are a couple of little catches or flaws in the fabric, but nothing noticeable. I like the feel of the wool and enjoy wearing this kilt. I am noticing that the pleats are loosening up and will need some pressing at some point. I wear it to work, home, out and about when I want wool but don't want to wear the formal kilt. Most of all, I love this tartan, very earthy and understated and great colors for autumn and winter.
