    Black Watch

I would like the opinion of the great rabble.

My first kilt was a semi-trad black watch. I like it but always wished I had
gone with a 5- yard wool.i am concidering that now but don't know had to pleat it. I the traditional way would be to the single stripe, I really like the double stripe. However in talking to Rocky, he explained that due to the size of the pleate's on the 5-yard ,some of the black block would show every other pleat.

My question is has any of the rabble pleated a 5-yard black watch and do you like it or does the black blocking take away look or should I pleat to the single stripe. Thanks for your thoughts.

I have made loads of Black Watch kilts. They weren't 5 yards, but the ways I pleated them should work with 5 yard kilts. I pleated some alternating between the no stripe and the single pair of black lines (they could also be done to the no stripe only. Some call it to the "bar"). Others I pleated to the black stripe which is on the green. Both ways will accommodate a wider pleat.

This is the way my Black Watch is pleated. To the double black stripe alternating with no stripe.
As you can see it is a small pleat but this is an 8 yard kilt.

I like your pleats Phil (sailortats). I noticed that you have a keen eye for style and design though. This may give the OP the answer sought after.

My first question would be: What has Rocky suggested? The thing about low yardage kilts is that they require wider pleats, and therefore it is hard to isolate the elements in the sett sometimes. In the case of the Black Watch tartan, the sett is quite wide and so it limits your options. Phil's (sailortat's) picture may be your compromise, if you want a double black stripe. My best advice in this case is listen to your kiltmaker.

I agree with the advice "listen to your kilt maker". Rocky's reputation speaks to USAK doing their best to meet your wants. If you want 5 yds or if you want a particular pleating - one of those "wins" to your judgement and Rocky will no doubt guide you well.

Maybe go with an 8 yarder...

Ask Rocky if he could do what you want with an 8 yard kilt. If he can, then just delay your purchase and save up the extra for the 8 yarder.

Or, pick another stripe or bar to do the pleating to, like was shown. Of course, they may only work with an 8 yard kilt.

If you wouldn't mind not having it in wool, you might ask Rocky if they would do an 8 yarder in PV.
